Since my engine has about 60,XXX KM's on it. (S14 SR20DET) - I'd like to maybe ensure a long life for the thing, and the turbo component of it as I don't intend to upgrade the turbo in the near future. A friend of mine has told me a good way to make sure everything is running tip top is to actually dismantle the turbo and components, dismantle the turbo itself, and do a good cleaning job. Obviously a cleaner system boasts better efficiency - I'm just wondering if any of you have heard of doing this or have done it yourself, at what points in you engine, and is this job worth it? I've read the FSM on removing and inspecting the turbo and it seems like a LOT of things to remove and pull from the car engine itself. I'm a bit of a novice, but I was wondering how easy / long is this project? I'll be doing it over the winter months, but I'd still like to not take too much time on this.

Any tips and information would help as well. I'm a firm believer in getting a car back to it's original running condition before performing any more modification. Also it's an almost free operation aside from labour and as a student, I'll settle for efficiency over effectiveness for now .

unbolting the downpipe from the exhaust housing of the turbo is simple. The biggest thing I hate to do is take the damn turbo off the exhaust manifold. If you had to do it, remove the whole turbo along with the manifold out of the engine first, don't just try to take the turbo itself out because its a pain taking those locking plates off under the car. There are 4 nuts on the turbo exhaust housing with locking plates that you need to ply open with a flat head to start loosening the nuts out.

I wouldn't bother unless you're taking out the turbo to rebuild the whole thing. Cleaning wise if you're taking apart the whole thing you might as well buy replacement parts that come with a turbo rebuilt kit.

never done it before so couldn't tell you how easy or hard it is.
