Hi,
I'm going to be doing some service (first time) to my '01 Maxima, so I've been reading through its Service Manual. I'm a little confused, though, when it comes to testing the connectivity, with a multimeter, of the ecm and <whatever> wire.
On page EC-65, Checking Front Heated Oxygen Sensor LH Signal, it states:
"5. Set voltmeter probe between ECM terminal 62 and ground."
Ground being terminal numbers 106 or 108.
However, on page EC-148, it states (at bottom):
"Do not use ECM ground terminals when measuring the voltage. Doing so may result in damage to the ECM's transistor. Use ground other than the ECM terminals, such as the body ground."
Don't these two parts contradict one another? What other ground is there that's near the ECM if I already have the voltmeter in one of the terminals? I don't want to blow anything. Should I use body ground (unpainted screw, chassis?) rather than the ECM ground (terminals 106 and 108)? What I'm asking is, what other grounds are there in that area? Apologies if I'm not understanding something here. Thanks.
TW
