Greetings,I'm new to this forum so forgive my inexperience.

I have a 94 maxima and have a problem with the heater. While driving or idling, the temp gauge goes to cold and the heater blows cold air. This could happen anytime, even when it's not cold out and I think the thermostat has already opened. When the temp gauge shows normal operating temp, the heater works fine.

Thanks for your help and expertise!

Welcome. It sounds like it could be a couple of things. Let's start off with the easy one. When the car is cold, take the radiator cap off and see if there is any coolant in the radiator. If not, add some and should be problem solved. I would buy the pre-mixed coolant as it makes things easier and less messy.

Thanks for the reply,

I should have said this . The coolant level is full and has been flushed (by a shop) in the last 6 months.

Check the hoses for heat. If the hoses cool down try a thermostat.

sounds like you may have an air pocket trapped in the heater core. if you have access to a "spill-free coolan funnel" you can bleed the system fairly easily. install the funnel and fill half way with coolant. jack up the front of the vehicle and warn to normal engine temp. once at temp run vehicle at 2000-3000 rpm and monitor coolant funnel. you will likely see it burp the air and then drain into the radiator.hope this helps you fix your car. if not it may be time for a thermostat.
