I have suspected for some time that my fuel gauge is not accurate. It seems to be a bit random in terms of displaying fuel usage...ie, I occassionally make my daily commute (about 30 minutes) and arrive at my location with more fuel on the gauge than when I left. I have also noticed that I frequently will read the 1/3 to 1/4 of a tank range and yet can only fit 8-10 gallons of gas in the car.

When I changed the fuel pump earlier this week I conciously let the fuel tank run much lower than I normally would in an attempt to have less fuel in the tank during the work. My gauge showed about 1/8th of a tank when I parked it to do the fuel pump job. However, when I opened the tank up to get the pump out there was at least 1/3rd of a tank left.

I checked the float on the fuel pump assebly and it appeared to be operational, the little metal contact point between the arm and the sensor appeared to be in good contact, and it didn't look as though the arm was bent in a way that would put the float in contact with the edges of the tank in any way.

Anyone have suggestions or dealt with this before?

18x7.5 with +35 offset. Pretty sure.

Yeah you're right, it has nothing to do with his concern.

Sending unit is usually the culprit, I imagine yours is toast if the float looks like it is working. I have not had this on a Q but my Z had that issue, at least it is wrong in the "right' direction and not letting your run out of gas!

If you have suspected it for a while this might not apply, but our area had an issue with this a little over a year ago. One of the local gas vendors received a bad batch of gas (high sulphur content I think) and it fried several thousand sending units. My guess would be you would have heard about this if it was the case, but it might not hurt to call some of the local shops. The vendor ended up having to replace them all in our case.
