In your area, what does flashing highbeams mean?

What about if someone going the other way flashes their lights?

Out in the Ghett0 part of town, it is supposed to be some gang initiation thing, i read that in the newspaper. Also means get the fugg outta the way, or someone (usually a friend) trying to flag you down, or if its going the opposite direction, it means shut off your damn highbeams.

I've come accoss some guys on I-495 that take off like a bat outta hell when i flash my lights behind them. Seems to think I want to race. I never usually flash people, I just overtake them.

What everyone said is pretty universal, me thinks; in Jamaica, lights int he daytime always mean cops are ahead (speedtrap or whatever). Well actually not only cops, but any danger on the road, eg. a cow wandering across the street or kids playing.

I agree with most of what's been said, especially the last comment about lights on in the daytime. If i see cops waiting to catch speeders, I'll throw on the lights in the daytime for the next mile to let people know.

Also, I flash the highbeams to let people know that I'm going to overtake them so they don't change lanes. I know that's done all over the world. Watch the movie 'Ronin' and you'll see that the sexy IRA girl flashes her brights in the BMW constantly in the race scene where they travel through the tunnels. ...see it's on the films, it must be true.

In means the same in my area as Lepchits1 said, but it also a way of saying bye to a friend that is riding in front of you when they are turning, and they generally double tap the brakes in response saying goodbye. My girlfriend does the emergency flashers to say goodbye. Also, double flashing tells a Semi or a truck with a trailer that they have enough room to move over into your lane without clipping you.

I was using my highbeams once to read some hard to see street signs , and this jackass coming the opposite way flashed his highs at me, so I, being an antagonist, flashed mine back. This crazy ******* chased me down and blocked me in a deadend road and gets out of his car all pissed off like "do you have a problem with bright lights?" I said "no but you obviously do". He gets closer to my car and realizes that his 55 year old butt would get whooped by the two 250+lbs dudes (me and a friend who is 6'4", 290) in the car and starts to back down. crazy old people.

Only during the day. At night, the protocol is to turn your lights off briefly and back on again.

here in chicago when we street race, in a industrial park or 2 lane road where ever it may be, it means if your coming that way. get the hell out of the way, because the cars coming are taking up both lanes... in other words, move onto the shoulder.

I think the reason for fashing the lights depends on the situation and time of day. If the car flashing you is coming toward you, I highly doubt he's looking to race you:

daytime possibilities: 1. warning you a radar trap is coming up/ or some kind of problem ahead 2. Some kids flash their lightes to people who drive the same model car as a friendly acknowledgement, like motorcyclists that wave to each other.

nightime could be any of the following:1. you forgot to turn your lights, you bonehead2. you have your high beams on, you inconsiderate boob3. there's a speed trap or some other problem ahead4. Wake up and drive on your side of the road
