Hello everyone. I figured y'all would enjoy a brief stealership story.

Monday morning I went out to the garage, and reached over to open the door of the Focus. The door is supposed to auto unlock, and it did not. Fortunately, I was prepared for this problem. I read before I purchased it that the 12v battery is needed to turn the engine on and run the car. I took the key out of the fob, opened the door, the hood and put the multimeter on the battery. 3.5 volts. So I call the local Ford dealer, and I walk him through my problem and make sure it's ok to put the charger on it. They told me it's fine. As soon as I turn it on, do a relay fires, and the battery tender shuts down. So I disconnect the battery, charge it up, less than 5 minutes later the charger shuts off. It's at 11.8v. I figure that's enough to get it going. As soon as the cable is on the battery, the relay fires again, and I hear the battery cooling system clunk like it always does. I let it sit for a minute, the car still won't boot, and the multimeter says 5.6v. So obviously the relay is draining the battery when the car is parked.

It's been sitting a lot the last few weeks. It was in the shop for paint work due to an incident with an agile post. After which, the weather was good and we've been riding the scooters around. So over about 4 weeks it was charged once. This allowed the 12v to deplete. The way it charges and depletes makes me think it has a bad cell. I called the dealer back, told them my experience with the battery, and they agreed that the battery should be replaced. I try to make an appointment, but since my car is under warranty, the car needs to be taken to one of a specific few dealers that have Electric certified mechanics, because Hybrid certification isn't good enough to change my battery. So I call Damerow Ford, and I ask to make an appointment. The receptionist tells me to drive it in. I point out that I cant' do that. The receptionist tells me that they can get it done 3 to 5 days from whenever I can get it there and hangs up the phone. :wtf2: So now I call Ford Corporate. I'm fairly angry due to the receptionist at Damerow. So I ask what I'm supposed to do to get the car there. She then informs me that Ford Roadside Assistance, which was included in my new car warranty, would come tow my car to the dealer free of charge. So in order to get a battery, I have to leave my car dead, have Ford tow it to the dealer so they can see the dead battery, authorize the replacement, and then whenever they feel like giving me my car back, I'd have to go get it.

So I charged the battery enough to boot the car, and then plugged it into the wall. The on board charge will charge the 12v, so I left it overnight. The battery is at 13.8 and holding, but I'm just going to buy a battery myself. Warranties are s***.

f*** that man. Let them fix it, its at no cost to you and you'll probably get a loaner at no cost for the days that aren't nice enough to Scoot.
Plus, if you fix it, they will probably void your warranty or something.

I don't understand why the car doesn't have a deep cycle battery in it. It's not a normal car where it's constantly charged. It gets charged, run to depletion, and then charged again. We know normal batteries don't handle this well, that's why deep cycle batteries exist.

Yeah man, dealing with the dealership will most likely lead to more frustration. If something is under $200, just do it yourself.
I f*** hate dealers.

I had a sign printed, nailed it to a wooden post, and stood in front of Royal Gate Chrysler at rush hour. I made sure to get clearance from the city and handed out flyers to everyone who drove in explaining why I was picketing.

Wasn't long before I got an apology. I ended up fixing the car myself for $85 versus the $7000+ they were going to charge my warranty company.

Dealers suck but sometimes the fight is fun.

I have a cordless electric lawnmower. It runs on two 12V batteries in series for 24v. They're deep cycle batteries, but I still only get about 2, maybe 3 years out of them. They now make lithium batters in typical frames now. They're expensive, but they aren't harmed by complete discharges. IIRC, the ones I was looking at claimed that after 2000 cycles, they still had 80% capacity. My deep cycle lead acid batteries are getting down to being basically useless after maybe 200 cycles. The lithium also don't really self discharge like lead acid batteries do. I think it was like a few percent every month. Plus they weigh less.

I've had such terrible experiences with Ford dealers. I've had them give terrible advice because they skipped basic troubleshooting. I've been charged for work that I later found out was covered by recalls. I've gone in to confirm my own diagnoses, been told I was wrong and given another diagnosis, only to be proven right later. I've taken cars in for infuriating issues, left them for days of diagnostics, been told they can't find the cause, and later found the simplest cause imaginable that they just didn't bother trying. And Ford dealer service writers are the most condescending and reluctant to actually arrange service of any grumpy-a** dealer employees from any brand on Earth.

I hate Ford dealers. I've found one that wasn't terrible. One. In the middle of nowhere Idaho. All the rest have been astonishingly terrible, even by the low standards of car dealers in general.
