in the end, is shifting with a 6mt and a 6cvt really any different?

I know a cvt is .1 or .2 seconds slower, but in the end...is there really any difference? Loss of control or horsepower? thanks guys

are you talking about in manual mode? manual mode doesn't even come close to a real 6 speed manual. i mean ya you can pick "gears" but it doesn't give you that kick like stick shift does. stick shift is really fun to drive and i sometimes miss it but then again, stick shift is waaaaaaaaaay more temptation to go fast! lol CVT is a good daily driver. i mean it's very smooth (never shifts), doesn't require 2 hands to drive, gets about the same gas mileage as stick and performance wise it's a little slower after 90 MPH against a GOOD driver but i can tell you now that theres A LOT of people who can't drive stick right and will lose against an auto (not specifically talking about A/C drivers, just saying stick shift drivers in general).

I think there's a limited on CVTs till around 40mph.I don't feel I'm getting all my 3.5 power till thenwhen it finally reaches near red.

Anyone think so to?

about people not knowing how to drive stick properly... and yeah there is much more temptation for gunning it with stick. but i'd pick stick any day over cvt.

just go test drive a 3.5se 6mt and then test drive a 3.5se cvt. you will then know the difference.

ive been learning stick on my boy's 87 eclipse (best year of the eclipse btw) and i it really is somethin else. I completely understand the want to go fast with a stick, its always like "i have to reach fourth before i stop at this light", its so easy to push yourself with a stick. Problem is if i get the ac this fall, same time the 09 is rumored to come out, there aren't going to be any more 6mts (all 09s are rumored to be cvt) so i was just curious in case i was stuck with a cvt. thanks for the help

wow i wonder if that's true about the 09's not having any autos. that would probably make all the 08's worth alot more for ppl dying to get this car in manual .. i prefer driving manual but theres much more of an urge to speed because it's easier in a sense.. but it sucksssss in traffic and when ur tired. burt.. i live in east brunswick too.. ive prob seen u around.. what color's ur car?

If you can, get the manual. I have cvt, and hate driving it. Its not that there is anything wrong with the CVT, I just prefer the manual.I definately feel like I made a mistake not getting the manual, and if I had the chance would change that decision.

I wasn't about to get my Coupe without a manual transmission. Not only is it a lot more fun to drive, but a front-wheel drive car with a manual shift is far superior to an automatic in all the snow we get up here in the North East. I wasn't about to give up that control, or the blast of speed you get by downshifting before passing another car. I've only had my Coupe for less than a week, but I'm so glad I held out for a manual and didn't settle for an automatic. Passed my first vehicle yesterday and it was like the USS Enterprise going into warp speed. Unbelievably exhilerating! But I'm not normally a fast driver. I think the Coupe is almost as much fun to drive slow as it is to drive it fast.

CVT does have "manual mode" so it's very easy to pass cars too. i just hit it in manual mode and down shift a couple "gears" and floor it and it takes off like a rocket. OR if you have a CVT and you drive it in manual mode, if your cruising in 6th gear and all of a sudden want to pass a car or something, just floor the gas and the car will automatically down shift it into 2nd or 3rd. it down shifted and almost got the RPMs up to redline for me a couple times and it takes off very fast.

but stick shift does give u that little kick that CVT's manual mode doesn't when shifting gears
