Jeez. That sucks man. I went through similar stuff trying to get a viscous though. First one I had shipped from a junkyard, turned out to be open, second was shipped from an ebay seller, turned out to be a scammer selling an open, third was shipped from a legit ebay seller, but it turned out to be blown, and the 4th is installed in my car. Unfortunately after 3 months, it's not locking very well anymore.2lua wrote:unfortunaly yes! but he said that he will replace it once all the facts about this come back as an open diff.thanks for the comments and every one else respond to this....
Yeah it was bad. I had even installed the blown one, because it is impossible to know if it is blown when it's out of the car. So, I had taken the open one out, put in the blown vlsd, then drove on it,realized it didn't lock, took it out, put the open back in, returned the blown one, got another one, took out the open, then installed the new viscous.2lua wrote:man you are in the worst case then i am...
Not really, because I realized that I hate vlsd.2lua wrote:well at least at the end you came out smiling...
Heh. Installing a helical is not as simple as just swapping in the pumpkin. I'm still looking into this for myself. Some say shimming is neccesary, others disagree. At any rate, you still have to swap the ring gear, and use different ring gear bolts or sleeves.IWannaS15 wrote:Just be glad you checked before installing the diff. Its kinda messed up someone threw that sticker on an open diff
hey dean, if I ever need help swapping a diff, I know who to ask. *cough* helical *cough*.
All r200 viscous diffs act the same way. Turn the input shaft, and both of the axles should spin the same way. turn one axle, and the other should spin the same way. It is also ALOT harder to turn by hand than an open diff.anumeric wrote:I picked up a j30 vlsd awhile back at a junkyard and when I rotated the axles they spun opposite directions as well. It had the vlsd sticker on it as well and looked like it had been on there for years with some road grime on it. Thing is I took the thing off the car myself. Still haven't installed it and haven't opened it up either to check it out. But I thought some diff. only lock up and spin the same direction when torque is applied. Correct me if im wrong.
Another good test is trying to turn the two shafts in opposite directions. It's pretty hard if the diff is still in good shape. 35 bucks is a steal btw.anumeric wrote:Whew I just ran out to the garage to double check and they do turn the same way, lol "I need some sleep", Then again I got the thing and it's been sitting for almost 2 yrs. I almost tricked myself into thinking I got ripped. Ah well either way it only cost 35 bucks. lol
