i keep getting this error at the bottom right of my screen that says, "C:\$CMT file or directory is missing or corrupt. please run chkdsk"

ok, i ran chkdsk and nothing happened. i have run my norton software and nothing happened. i cant get windows service pack 2 to install due to this prob. i am running xp home and know very little about computers. my wife is tired of hearing homestar say "baleted" every time the window comes up.

Put your windows xp cd in and set up bios to boot from the cd first. Then, as the cd loads, there should be options to format and reinstall, reinstall over previous, and repair. Try using repair (hit R when it asks you what to do) and follow those directions. If that doesnt work, try the repair without format, or go ahead and format everything, just make sure to back up all the stuff you might need.

See, that's the problem. When you use Linux, however, it actually has stuff happen. It even boots up.However, the NT 6 kernel is far more stable than any other Windows kernel. It still sucks major balls compared to any other OS out there, but its getting a lot better. Unfortunately for you, my firend, Windows 2000 is based upon the NT 4.0 kernel. That one is very very similar to the Windows 95 kernel, which everyone knows is the worst OS in the history of the computer.

But hey, if you're really careful with it, it'll last a while no matter what its running. (I think my record with Windows 98 was 6 whole months!!!)
