I have an 89 240sx with a ka24e motor. I pulled the timing chain and tensioners to fix the rattle of death, noted that the timing chain came off the cam gear without pulling the gear first (obviously stretched) and pulled the sprockets. I'm now reassembling.

However, I noticed that the kit that I bought off of ebay, cheap, is improperly marked. I've compared the cam and crank sprocket, they are correct, and the chain has the correct NUMBER of links, however the timing links are improperly marked.

Does anyone know off-hand how many links there are between the two marked timing links? This is very important as I don't want to purchase another chain, and I can't afford to mess up this motor!

Any information is greatly appreciated.-Rob

Alright, so, in lieu of having any information I decided to take a closer look at my old timing chain. Every link was black, and I just assumed that it was from factory (although it would be very old from factory... 300k). However while reading timing chain threads I read that the marked links could be lighter aswell.

I had two lighter links. There were 19 links between them. Counting from one to the other, it is the 20th link. For some reason the second marked link on my chain was 11th, meaning that it was off by 9 links.

Anyway, I figured it out. I'm hoping this method pans out in the long run.

I'll post here after I start her up (will be a few days still) and let you know if there is valve carnage!

Hate to be the one to tell you this but.. Ebay timing chain kits are a really bad move. Your asking for disaster with anything other than an OEM replacement.

Theres a few things you stick with OEM for. Oil pumps, oil seals, piston rings, and timing chain components.

Anyway, there wont be any chance of valve carnage if you make sure the engine spins freely before you try to start it. Spin the engine around a few times to make sure you dont have any piston to valve contact, EVERY time you mess with cam timing.
