My Seville will be making a pilgrimage back to its homeland, and I want to see the last remnants of America's manufacturing superpower before it all turns into garbage piles, tattoo shops, and urban prairie.

So far planned:Coney dogs at American and LafayetteFord Museum and IMAX threatreGM Ren CenMotown Museum http://www.motownmuseum.com/mtmpages/info.html

What areas/exits should I avoid at night? What else should I check out on a first time visit?

It's been many years since I've been to Detroit, but the Ford and Motown museums are good choices and already on your schedule. IMHO Detroit is better in the summer with all of their boating stuff.

A couple of thoughts:

1. You could see if the Red Wings or Pistons are playing in town . The Wings might be a tad pricey, but the Pistons should be reasonable. 2. I don;t know how you feel about gamb|ing but Detroit has a few casinos, including one in Greektown. might want to check out who's headlining. For all you know Mandy Moore might be performing at one of them...3. Belle Isle is nice with some great views, though it's probably better in the summer.4. Driving along the shore, Lake Shore Drive I think it's called, has some nice views.

Enjoy.

Here's a good compilation of stuff you're too late to see:

And here's something that's probably best to see in photos rather than in person, the school system's former central warehouse:

Instead of a motel, it might be cheaper to buy a nice brick home for the night for one dollar:

...and if your credit is halfway decent, you can put down 20 cents, and take out a 30 year fixed for the balance.

Holy crap, i just went through all of the book depository photos, its really sad to see all of that, it reminded me of the series of photos with the lady on the motorcycle in Chernobyl. Very moving pictures.

yah really... Buy a house... it'll be cheaper than paying for a hotel room for a night.

Make sure you get one right on 8-mile and park the cadillac on the street... Don't worry, nothing will happen to it.

Visit the UAW headquaters so you can see the epicenter of the ruin of our auto industry.

Not dead yet! Saw Isuzu, Bosch, Brembo, and several other firms on the way in. Lots of terrible roads, gorgeous views.

We'll see when I go to the city tomorrow.

Ford factory tour was awesome. GM Ren Cen was worthless.

So far a pretty cool town to visit. Already have plans to come back.
