Now I know you guys have heard this a million time but I pose an interesting question. After talking to my local DMV and a few people at my insurance company, I put both of my cars on this "collector car insurance" in NJ.

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Inspections/ ... #Collector

Now this basically makes both cars inspection exempt with the requirement of staying under 3000 miles a year.

I have been reading all of the threads, papers and information I can about importing a skyline to the US and from what I am reading, the biggest issue seems to be smog related. Although I am not sure regarding crash testing and that whole thing. I kinda just got confused regarding all of that. If someone could explain that a bit better that would be great :).

Reason I just popped up asking this is my cousin (first cousin :rotfl not brothers friends cousin) has a 1990 Nissian Skyline R32 GTR that he is selling. He just got married over Labor Day Weekend and really doesn't drive it that much. That and Canada's laws for going 50kmph over and your car gets crushed and possibly fined $10,000 doesn't help his case to keep it either.

So my question is it plausible to bring one to NJ? My friends gave me a list of steps that he did for when he imported his S14 (I can post them up later) but I didn't really look into it that much as the S14 is in the US already.

If not, I guess I can just wait 4 years and bring it down.

Thanks,
Alan

P.S. I put my flame suit on so I will be fine. :dblthumb:

It is a Federally illegal car, it doesn't matter what state says or do(I.E register/insure it), it's still illegal.

Yes people do it, and yes people do get them seized/deported/crushed. Some don't have a problem but it's still a gamble..

This was posted at the end of 09, so I'd imagine it's worse/getting worse now

I see. I will be talking to my local DMV to see what they say. From what I remember, in NJ, the 25 year importing law can be reduced to 20 if put under collector car status. I will triple check and get things in writing obviously before I attempt anything.

I will definitely update you guys on what happens.

I don't think you understand, it is Federally illegal. It doesn't matter about it being in NJ or not, it goes by what the DOT/NHTSA/FMVSS says.

I am in no way telling you not to buy one, I'm just letting you know that there's a possibility of waking up one day to a letter from the Feds saying they're taking your car.

I understand that. When I said I would be going to the DMV, I should have stated I would be mainly asking this as well.

Thanks,
Alan

That is unfortunately the best way. I don't like the rules any more than the next guy, however the guy that normally gets burned, is the good guy.

There are some bad people out there, scamming people, taking guys money telling them they can import cars. The only guys catching the short end, are the guys that just don't know.
