Here's a somewhat related article, that discusses the ins and outs of engine swaps in Cali.

<doesn't look good, since there's no "smog" equipment, on the imported motor>

A little something from the California BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repairs).

Short and sweet of it is, better be buddies with your inspector or hope he is a retard. No way is a swapped engine legal in Cali. Ahhh...Between the 93 octane at the pump and no smog, I love living in Texas;)

actaully, japan has pretty tight emission standards. its just the fact they arent the same as cali and the swap itself isnt legal.

i beleave that all engine swap that are not made in the us cars are considered to be illegal... i might be wrong but that is what i was told by allstate my insurance company, and they wouldn't cover my 93 mr2 with a 97 turbo motor, told me not to tell the next insurance company about it and then get property insuracne on the motor itself...

move out of cali :) i heard that if you build and register your car in say, arizona or nevada, then you can keep it in california, since the cali laws won't apply to out of state vehicles.
