It's true. Once a car reaches 25 years old, it's legal for importation with no problems.

What if i buy a GTR now and keep it in storage for anther few years till that 25 year mark hits. Would i be able to register it or does it have to be imported?

not to sure but i would assume that since it is not 25 years old it would still technically be illegal to have in the states.

Not true, as long as you're not driving it on the road.

This is the word on the street...

But I wouldn't want to be the one who pays to have a 25 year old Skyline imported & then find out it needs to be sent back.

It's your $$$

No, because in order for that to work, the paperwork has to state that the car was imported from country of origin to the U.S. on or after it's 25th year. So, if you brought it into the states, then waited, it would still show that the car was imported before it was supposed to be.

Yeah, you could do that - as long as the storage isn't in the US...

In Colorado you can register anything 25 years old, You get collectors plates that last for 10 years. They do that so you don't have to show proof of insurance every year to get it registered.

The 25 year mark is a federal law, not a state law.

Insurance on the other hand, is dependent on the state law. Most states require that you have insurance on any vehicle, regardless of year.

They grow a buttload of sugarcane around my neck of the woods, know that I will be converting the old battlewagon to ethanol when it becomes necessary. I might hang the tail of an extension cord out the back just to keep people wondering.

Confirm what, the 25 year law? Or the Canadian 15 year law? I don't have time to look up the actual article and section number right now, but it's there. Read this:

nope, it still has to comply with DOT and EPA, an illegal motor is an illegal motor

just because states registration does not require a smog test does not mean that you can just swap in something that does require emissions without it.

According to federal law, any vehicle older than 25 years old can be imported and does not have to meet any EPA requirements. It does however have to meet DOT requirements (EPA is federal, DOT is state).

Also, any car with a motor that is 25 years old or older can be imported, but you can not legally put an older motor in a car than what the year of the car is. So in other words, it's perfectly legal to import a '72 Z. However, you can not import a '90 Z with a '72 motor in it, or in fact, even swap a USDM motor from a '72 into a USDM '90 chassis.

Not to import a vehicle. It is a federal law that states 25 years to be EPA compliant. What you are referring to would only apply to state mandated emissions laws.
