Just newly imported a 1998 Nissan Gloria, and it is my very first car imported from japan, was wondering if i needed to run premium gas, as i am aware that Japanese fuel is a lot better than ours, or so i am told. Do i need to run US 93 octane and higher? or is running the regular US 87 - 89 octane just fine?

Is it V6 and what does the fuel tank cap say? I’d say you will be okay with regular, but 89/91 best bet.

That said, in some states: premium when I do the math when traveling, can be a loss of 1 to 2 gallons. Places like Illinois and Iowa usually run 90 cents to a dollar more per gallon from premium: easily adding or subtracting $10-$20 bucks from an E to F fill up. It’s crazy.

I don’t ever hear knocking using 87 and I have 2 vehicles that are V8 (one actually runs okay on 87 but it’s American), however I notice my Maxima which a relative frequently puts in 87, seems more sluggish than it used to be. I keep telling her, don’t be filling up with that cheap a** gas. Use migrade or premium. It’s not a f*** Dodge neon lol.

I think my Q was given a steady diet of 87 at some point in its ownership, but I think all except the catalytic converter has been redeemed lol.

Isn't there a sticker inside the fuel door telling you what octane to use?
