I completely agree with you Mazz. The bit about the warm blankie and the depreciation of a new car is dead on. It's great that we all can agree to disagree politely and with respect. Both of our points are well made, just different. I like my warm blankie, and I'm fairly certain on the bit about improved sex life. I perform better when not weighed down with worry over an alternator, LOL.
I think the warranty was invented by a marketing genius way back, who saw that cars were no longer being made to last, and that people were financing for 5-6 years on a car that was no longer backed by the manufacturer after 3 years and sometimes began to fall apart in 4 years. Thus began the wager. They bet that you will not need to contact them after your check clears and you bet that you will. It's a bit like a casino, really. Sometimes you do quite well, but since many do not, the house always wins in the end. Some peeps sit at the table until the children's college fund is gone, some peeps stay until they gain a little and walk off, and others just walk past without stopping at all.

tl;dr
I bought my car with 1 week of warranty left. I did not have the time to drive and become acquainted with the car enough to find out any of the "quirks" associated with it before the warranty expired. I discovered my front distance sensor wasn't working correctly a few days after it expired. I went to my dealership and they WOULD NOT good-faith warranty it until they got approval from consumer affairs.

Long story short, CA covered the cost of the distance sensor at $2100, i covered labor at $250. This was in the fall.

Winter rolls around a month or so later and I discover that there is no heat coming out of the foot vents. Take it in; they want $1600 in parts/labor to replace the heater core. I didn't do it...yet...

I typically don't buy extended warranty either, but I absolutely wish I did on this one. I still probably won't in the future. Just something to consider.

The way I see it - if you don't want to, don't have the ability to, or don't have the time to fix your car in the event that something SHOULD happen, then the extended warranty is a great option. As we all know dealership prices are high and most of the repairs could be done for less.

However, there is something to be said for not having to fix anything yourself if any of the above options come into play. My experience with Infiniti vehicles has been nothing but great. In the end, you need to weigh the pros and cons for yourself. I don't carry a warranty on my 2013 G37. But its paid off, and if I had to have someone other than me (not likely) fix an issue, I could do so.
PROS | CONS

make your decision - but realized sometimes the warranty pays for itself many times over, more often than not it won't.

I have mentioned before that with this car I made a point of looking for one without all the bells and whistles; no AWD, 4WS, lane departure, adaptive CC, parking sensors, 57 speakers, etc. I have all this gear on my other ride (under factory warranty) and was looking for more of a low hassle, high HP, driver like my previous car was. I think I got it. Plus I do all my own maintenance and repair - it's my therapy.

Now all the expensive, non-self-induced failures I have read about here in the M/Q70 forum seem to be related to these extra systems. So for anyone reading this thread I would definitely suggest getting the warranty if you are getting or got a "loaded" model. Even if its a more base model like mine go with your gut.

I don't think these systems are likely to fail, I just think that the more auxiliary systems and components you add, the higher your chance of something failing gets. And the fancier the system the higher the price will usually be to repair it. If you prefer the dealer repair shop or have no better option the repair cost just went up even more.

Wth my lower count of possible failure points and technical abilities, I opted for no warranty.

I also do all of my own work, but honestly, time vs money. I'd rather pay $2k once, and never have to deal with doing an axle replacement, etc. due to failure or something (for example, both my brothers have 2014 Honda Odyssey's and BOTH of their vans have an issue where the front CV boot somehow gets punctured). It's not a terribly hard fix, but I'd rather not bother with it and have someone else do it.
