so im at the borders the other day and browsing the mags....now normally i hate imp tuner but something on the cover caught my eye....the title was UNDERGROUND: the cars, cops and crashes of illegal drifting.....just as i always feared....drifting has come to that point....kind of a strange situation...i remember thinking i wish drifting would catch on....because a few years back parts were much harder to come by.....and there were zero drift events...but to every possitive there is a equal negative. task forces to catch drifters?? anyways the article it pretty good actualy....of course there are some technical errors but overall it was good. i especially like the quotes from L. Toguchi...then there are some cheesy fakes pics of guys pretending to drift. and a few pics of wrecked 240s and a jetta.....yes a jetta. anyone here go to GMR...? any input of the situation?

are you referring to the " Glendora Moutain Road" here in CA?

and what issue of IMP are you talking about?

It's in the latest one. The article is probably on their website now..

It's an ok article to read, but I was confused about the list of things to take with you while drifting(things such as rope "so you can get pulled out of a ditch") but in the next paragraph, they say matter-of-factly do not drift on public roads. Where else would you encounter a ditch? Irwindale??

How many ditches in the local parking lot?

Ahh i just bought it from Boarders. Damn there goes my fav battle grounds. Turnbull canyon and GMR were roads that i thought only me and some freinds knew about!! we ddint know many people went up there, damn ricers. Anyways the situation sucks here. Both passes are under constant surveilance and its fairly difficult to drive through them with being paranoid about cops. Its really bad out here, damn it. I stopped going to GMR last October bc my car had undergone an engine swap. Now that i have my car back i find out more ppl have died and police surveilance has increased by 130%. Turnbull isnt as bad, but it isnt advisable to road race there anymore. stupid people who think they can learn drifting on the fly. I hope these ppl wont flea to places like Carbon Canyon ( thats where my sig takes place) to do their stupid driving, i hope the " illegal drift task force" doesnt shut that down too.

why doesnt a race track buy some land on a mountain, and create a nice mountain run with safe barriers, but still make it fun and realistic. does this sound like that bad of an idea? i think you could make it pretty profitable and a good place to have fun and improve your skills..

Some race tracks cannot afford to maintain the drag strip.... I can't forsee anybody putting up money for such an idea, until drifting and touge battle becomes as large and profitable(that means sponsors like US Army, Powerade, Viagra, All, Tide, Target, Home Depot, etc) as NHRA or NASCAR.

Seattle's race track on the NHRA circuit, Pacific Raceway, is constantly abused by the comentators on ESPN drag racing coverage. Constantly they complain about horrible track conditions, lack of maintenance, and having essentially a dirt pit area.

If there's not enough revenues raised by the largest, most well known drag racing circuit, to maintain the only track of it's kind in the area, how could drifting events afford to 'buy' a mountain road circuit? Maybe this situation doesn't apply to people in other areas, but seeing it here firsthand is glaring proof that it'll never happen around here.

Hey, they're public roads to begin with.

And if you think your "Battle Grounds" are public roadways, you're doomed to be busted, crack up the car, or die.... just stating the obvious here. As long as you people give them a reason to bust you, they'll bust you and put your mug on COPS.

One word: Lawyers.

Well, lawyers and those damned liberal hippie enviro-whackos who think that the spotted freaking owl is terribly damned important.

Truthfully, the liability insurance for any kind of racing venue is insanely (and usually prohibitively) expensive.

I never stated that I thought of those roads as my "Battle Grounds" so don't put words in my mouth. The people who DO drive these roads responsibly only want to keep them as little known as possible so that the stupid and irresponsible people won't learn about them. GMR was closed to the public because stupid people started driving irresponsibly and someone died there. The road elevates to around 5000 feet and it is a small 2 lane pass with no guardrails on many turns. Not the place for irresponsible people who want to take silly joy rides and endanger their lives as well as others. Te fewer amount of pepole that know about these "secret spots" the smaller the chance of the idiots knowing about them.

Pilot: Putting words in your mouth? My comment about "battle grounds" was directed at S13GUY who called these roads his battle grounds. But now let's address your first post: you mention these roads as a place "where people go." With that sentence structure, one could be forgiven for thinking you were referring to a destination, instead of simply an avenue through which people pass.

What do you go there for? You go to this road, on your way to work? You go to Glendora Mountain Road, on the way to your girlfriend's house? You go to Glendora Mountain Road, to get your car sideways? It would only make sense, if you in your first post were speaking of a specific destination, stopping point, or final place of rest. Not so much a place through which one passes on his or her way to a greater goal or end. Destination, or passage way? Don't jump the gun if you haven't considered your own words, please.

Does everybody here have a case of guilty conscience? S13GUY, I wasn't addressing you with my previous post, but rather referencing your post, to explain my point to Pilot. Hence the "PILOT:" at the beginning of the post!

I see that you edited. Do we all get it now?

whoa relax there. you replied to my comment to s13 guy about disclosing names of mountain passes by saying they are public roads so i replied that people like me who enjoy driving responsibly for the sake of it don't want unsafe drivers learning about the roads we drive on. I go to mountain passes to drive on them and enjoy my car in a responsible manner. do i need a destination to do that?

Right, like when I head up to Mt Rainier on a weekday, on the bike just to get some fresh air. So we get it now? Cool...

Southern California is filled with twisty canyon roads. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to find one.

I was in Kmart tonight and happened to come across this issue. I didn't read any of the article, tho I did flip through it.

Is it just me or was IMP desperate for pictures? I saw the same scene on at least three pages for the one pic...

bleah, oh well... It's rare that I find a whole issue worth buying anyways...

sorry, just my $0.02

GMR was no secret.....maybe a few years back....but hell, i even knew about it and i live in N. Nevada. Anyways yeah that sucks that bad things happen and we all end up paying for it one way or another. I won't try to say I drive within legal limits at all times, running the passes can be fun, but with the understanding that it is extremely dangerous even under the most extensive precautions to your safety and others. When we run it is very late at night in very remote areas and even then radio communication is used to help keep things as safe as possible and everyone drives below their skill level. To those of you that are saints and never drive on public roads beyond the legal limits (non-exsistent) I'm sure you will disagree with something i say. Most of our group has been drifting and running touge for nearly a decade or more and it is our policy to keep it as safe as we possibly can and the mountain are no place to push you skills...that is reserved for the track. Recently we have not been running touge and reserve that driving for the track. And for all you newbies that want to be takumi the touge is no place for beginners and no place to learn technique. Register for the SCCA...get some seat time at a race track...I can't tell you to not run touge because i am no hypocrite but consider this ...paying $100 for seat time at a local track won't kill you but pushing your limits in the mountains can.

Keep in mind that other people may feel the same about you. There's always a driver with more skill, more experience, and a better-maintained car.

HOWEVER - If, by using the term "idiots", you are referring to people who drive irresponsibly on such roads, then unfortunately ANYONE who exceeds the speed limit on such a road is an "idiot". Sad but true.

Let's not have any more smart-arse comments (such as the one 2 posts back), please.

Thanks!

Im an idiot. I take unnesscessary risks all the time. then again, i know what my car can do and push it no farther than that. anywho, it still sucks that these guys are doing this s*** on public roads and now the cops will be all over ANYONE who looks like them. i dont drift, why? because i cant. but my car seems to have a little of the deedoubleO style, and i know cops will come after me if this gets big in Tejas.

Was that a smart-arse remark? If so then don't expect anyone to listen to your request. BTW I never said I was the "first" to discover drifting, but I did learn about it back in 1995. I even have an option video I bought back then.

BTW no one seems to have any comments about my remarks about cops reading these posts and the dumb arses tipping them off about popular roads for driving on. Could it be my point is valid?

My point was, the "cops" don't need a car forum to direct them to the "super secret" location you think no one else knows about but the "mad-tyte driftaz, y0".

You think cops don't know where the fun places to drive are?

Do they not drive cars themselves?

Are cops not into the import scene?

Do they live under rocks?

And don't you think a bunch of guys in old Triumphs or MGs or 240Zs have been ripping down that road since it was first paved? I guarantee they have. And they probably thought, "We'd better keep this quiet or EVERYONE will be out here ruining it for us."
