Ok what i thought was going to be a simple s13 cams into s14 engine is becoming a nightmare. I was installing the cam sprocket bolt when the washer fell down into the timing cover. I was trying to get it out when it then fell further, i cant see it with the flashlight so im trying to take off the timing cover when the on 10mm bolt on the left side closest to the exhaust manifold snaps.

ok im pissed off. Is it possible the easher dropped all the way to the oil pan? Hardly right? Im pissed, i need my car running tonight and i dont know what to do, any help?

Lift the block from the transmission bellhousing (if you're not willing to pull it)Drain oil, remove oilpan, check for parts. If none found, remove upper and lower timing covers and find part. If none found, look on the strut towers

Whatever you are doing tonight, forget about it, If you decide to drive it, tonight will probably end up being your last night out with that car. I'd take off the main pulley, take off the oil pump, take off the font valve cover, and look for that damned washer. I hear your pain, it's not gonna be a fun job, unless you get lucky and get a extra long magnet pens and try to fish for it.

Allright well ive calmed down a little bit. Today was just a very bad day. Too much stress with school, and home life, and bills and bull****. This just topped it...

Im going to try to pull the oil pan tommorow but i dunno if i can, i know i need to take off the front swaybar, but it looks like theres a pulley in the way, any help here? Is it possible to pull the pan without taking all the belts and pulleys off?

My friend is coming over tommorow with some magnetic wands and what not and hopefully we'll get lucky.

Does anyone know what to do about the sheared bolt though? It broke as i was trying to get it out. The majority of it is out i think but i still cant get the upper timing chain cover off, any help with this too? does it just lift staright up?

Thanks guys, its just been a frustrating day

As for the bolt...well, if the steel bolt is seized in the aluminum head it could be a ***** to remove.

You can try to drill with an appropriate sized left handed drill bit and that might gently back it out. You *really* don't want to hit the threads with the bit...that would suck.

If you manage to drill a hole and not damage the head, you can try one of those Easy Out kits, but if that thing snaps off in there you're really ****ed. Those suckers are hard. Much harder than the bolt.

PB Blaster or some other penetrant oil might help, I suppose. You could also try heating the area with a torch since aluminum expands faster than steel. Downside to that is...well, lots of stuff in your engine bay doesn't react well to open flame.

NOTE: PB Blaster IS VERY FLAMMMABLE!

Bottom line is that you don't want to **** up the head and then have to helicoil it.

If possible, I'd say find someone who's experienced in removing stuck bolts from aluminum. As I said, it's really easy to **** up an aluminum head. The service apes at the local Nissan dealership stripped four of the bolt holes for my valve cover.

As for the cam cover, once the bolts and distributor are removed, the only thing holding it on is RTV. I gently coerced mine with a piece of wood and a plastic mallet...be careful as the head gasket sticks out and is sandwiched between lower timing chain cover and the cam cover. I tapped from behind (from the back of the engine).

Edit: I didn't realize that the majority of that bolt was already out. I'd hit it with some PB Blaster wait a little while and then try to get a lefthanded bit in there and back it out OR use a regular drill bit, drill in a little bit and then try to reverse it out.

That's what I'd do, but I'd personally be very nervous about undertaking it myself. You really want that bolt to come out straight, and I hope that thing wasn't cross-threaded.

Grab a cup of java and relax, meanwhile read my thread....for a good laugh...I just went thru the hell of looking for a screw on my timing cover......Tried flexible magnet, no luck...tried taking timing cover, no screw....took oil pan, no screw.....Arrghh!!! put everything together and it works...the end of the story, the screw fell somewhere else outside of the engine and fell on the ground when we started it.....In the S13 disconnect sway bar from brackets and swing down, no need to take it off....good luck...your best option is to try flexible wand magnet....
