ever since i've had my s14 sr it had a rattle in the head... i figured it was the timming chain or air in the lifters... so i didnt drive it much.... one day i took it out after my brake swap and it decided to spin a rod bearing..so i have the bottem end built with egale h beam rods,je pistons and rings, king bearings, arp main studs... first problem came about when putting the oil pan on.. the arp studs hit the pan and cracked it...so i called around figuared out what to do to fix it. got it all fixed... then put on the new oem oil pump, waterpump, timing set... bolt the head down with comtic gasket and arp studs... bleed the lifters put them and the cams back in, set timming bam fires right up,but with a noise from the head... so pull it back apart re bleed the lifters.. still the same so i drive it around like 60 miles bring it back change the oil.. pull the cams back out to try bleeding the lifters one more time when i noticed my cam is wearing my caps and head down... so now i have to get a find a new head..... when will it end

Sounds like the engine was the problem from the get go. That's the chance we take buying an engine with no history from half way around the world.

It's okay, a lot of people had/have tens of thousands or more in old cars/trucks that they didn't pay much for either. Keep at it man. It's a passion. I keep having issues too, but then again, cars will.

Did you mix up the shims on the rocker arms/valves.

Did you Reset the Shims using new shim guides, and measuring the clearance?

Aggressive wear on the lobes, HLA, and rocker arms, plus an audible ticking noise from the head is a sign of bad shim tip height setup.

Reference the FSM for info on setting shims.

Is it a Black top, with the VVT ???

If so, did you guys around here, hear of the VVT Rattle, these engines get sometimes ?

This is a known problem, with the VVT (Intake) Sproket. This makes the car sound like a Diesel Engine ! Could easily be mitaken for a Dead Bearing sound.

To check if this is the case, you have two options:

1) If you have the sproket in your hand - hold it with two hands, and try to open it (to unscrew it). You shouldnt be able to move it. If there is movment, the Sproket is ****ed !

2) With the engine idleing, while hearing the noise - disconnect the VVT solonid from the Harness, and connect it to a +/- source, to engage it - or use the Nissan Datascan, with a laptop, to engage the VVT.

As soon as you engage it, the Rattle should stop, or atlist get much quiter.

I had this, on two BlackTops with VVT. On both the solution was a new VVT Sproket.

Good luck !
