ok so i rebuilt my ka. the car would start but couldnt get the timing right. discover the chains were off 4 links so i fixed that. now i cant get the car to start at all. i have fuel and spark, the timing is dead on. i did a compression check (motor cold) got 110 on all cylinders. not sure if the readings are low just cuz the motor is cold or not? i dont see how the head gasket could be bad sense the car has even been drivin yet. oh the car did start only once tho but ran for like 30 secs sounded kinda smooth then shut off. im so confused and dont even know where to start. im thinking that it might be electrical. one other odd thing is that the neutral safety switch buzzes when the key is on and you press the throttle or the battery is low. why would it do that?

When you say you rebuilt the engine, I'm assuming you used new piston rings and a fresh hone. The compression numbers seem low. Do you think there is a possibility that you bent some valves? Do a leak down test and see what you get. If your valves are slightly bent, that would explain the low compression numbers and the inability to start.

yes i put new rings. i dont recall the motor making any bad noises when i did have it running before i redid the timing chain. if i bent the valves would it have made a horrible noise? how do you do a leak down test?

here you go

leak down test are much better than a compression test. Compression tests dont tell you much of anything

The engine may not have made a horrible noise if you bent valves. Once the engine is spinning, if the valves come in contact with the pistons, the valves will bend very quickly and not contact the pistons again. It's a very quick occurrence. The engine would just not start. You may have only bent valves in particular cylinders, maybe just intake or just exhaust, or you may have bent all.

The leak down test will help you figure out where the cylinder pressure is being lost to. Leaking through the intake valves can be heard through the throttle body as hissing, through the exhaust valves can be heard through the exhaust. Just make sure that when you do the leak down test that all the valves are closed. You want to do the test on the compression stroke of each cylinder.

Check out the links above. You can make your own leak down tester. You just need access to a compressor to make things work.

ok so i built the leak down tester and re-did the compression test. i have 110 on all the cylinders with only a 10% during the leak down test. i have fuel and spark. the car still wont start and i am lost. i think maybe the computer itself is the problem but that just seems to be a long shot.

here is something to concider..

when you were 4 teeth off on the timing..you may have impacted the pistons with the valve..lifting the head up slightly as OEM head bolts will stretch some..even if minute...this may have led to some coolent in your cylinders cousing a loss in flamability of your fuel...this happend to me recently..

or....when you reset your timing...you forgot to reset the dizzy as well...if i were you..i would go back and start from TDC and reset everything timing on the block...just to rule it out..and if that still dosent fix the issue...then i would double check all grounding wires...and if still nothing...then id pull it all apart...look at the pistons for damage...if you see little marks from where the valves come down..then i would pull the valves and spin them in a drill to see if they woble or not ( fast way of seeing if there bent)..hope this points ya in the rite direction.
