Im new to the forum i just got my g a month ago and just turned 60,000 mile service. i called the factory to see how much it is and they said like $400 for oil change, air filter change, and coolant change. i work on alot of cars and figure i can do it myself but i do have one question i have no idea if the prior owner used synthetic or regular or synthetic blend is it too late to switch over cuz i plan on using sythentic when i change it? just wonderin in case it has been using conventional oil will it hurt anything??? ive searched around the forum alot and saw some people say it creates leaks is this true should i just put in a synthetic blend or go full synthetic??? thnx for the help sry to be a noob

I don't think it is going to change anything!

I use Mobil 1 Extended performance in all my cars!

It is best to use the synthetic because you could have problems if the previous owner used it and now to go back to dino oil might bring you some problems!

Welcome to Nico and The guys will be around soon to offer some other answers

I like Mobil 1 EP because you don't have to change the oil until you reach 1 year or 15k miles.... I love that! and it really does stay clean because of the Mobil 1 EP filter!

Yea, if you are living in NC 50/50 is just fine, no need for anything special.

Welcome to NICO.

Let's do some clarification.

Changine to synthetic now is completely fine EXCEPT, if you have any existing oil leaks. Those should be fixed prior to changing. I changed to synthetic on my I30 at 250k miles with no problems. That stuff came out black at 2k. I think my engine was dirty?!?!

As for what type of oil. This topic is SUPER controvertial. I just bought 5 qts of Amsoil 75w90 for my transmission and differential. It's a class 4 (?) synthetic. The company's marketing direction has always been fuel economy and reduced wear characteristics. Both of those are more important to me than 2-3 hp.

They also claim extremely long change intervals. I would NOT do this with Mobil 1. There has been talk about their formula having degraded from a class 4 down to a class 3 which I THINK means it it no longer 100% synthetic. I'll have to do more research.

My worry about Mobil 1 is that it will shear to a low viscosity with our high performance engines.

Running it for 5-6k wouldn't phase me. 15k on mobil 1...*crickets*

Motul is supposed to be a class 5 ester based synthetic. Sounds like a good oil, but I haven't used it.

Royal purple is great for racing applications, but I wouldn't try the extended drain intervals with their oil. Amsoil did a test and showed that the molybedenum (form of carbon) could fall out of isolation with extended use.

They really didn't say that RP was bad, just that it didn't have the lifespan of their oil. I've seen 1 or 2 magazine articles showing dyno results before and after RP. I think one showed as much as 7 hp.

Watch out with the Castrol. They have an American syntec and a German Syntec. The German one (says so on the back of the bottle) is supposedly much better. Not sure why.

I've been hooked on Royal Purple for years now. All of my cars love it! I would agree with SBD in that do the switch only if you don't have any leaks (which you probably don't, it is an Infiniti).

Motul is available at my local dealer. I think they use a synthetic blend for normal oil changes (other than the G37 which is now an ester based synthic per SteveTheTech) and they offer mobil 1 and Motul.

Amsoil has a weird distribution method. It's NOT MLM, but they also don't sell their stuff in the chain stores (that I know of) either. You can go on their website to find a dealer near you. It's usually an individual in your city/area.

If you like it enough, you can become a preferred customer or something like that and get "wholesale" prices for a $20 membership fee annually. Great if the whole family wants Amsoil. Not worth it if you don't at least spend $100/yr.

I happened to buy the Amsoil at Super Autobac's here in SoCal. I've been describing the place as "Toys-R-Us for car freaks". They sold Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, Lucas, Mobil 1, and a couple other well known brands in addition to the plethora of other car stuff they had.

I just got a new engine because of faulty piston rings on the last engine. So right now, I've been getting dealership oil changes. That will change shortly.

Nate:

I think I will use Royal Purple in my next oil change in a few weeks to see how it really works. I will report back on the effect on my car.

That one is a little out of my knowledge range. I haven't had any experience with the brembos to tell you which way to go.

I have personally used the hawk pads and I like them more than OEM, but in your case, you might have had all brembo parts to begin with.

One more thing. You WILL NEED TO SHORT CHANGE your oil after switching to synthetic. After about 1k miles you will need to change theoil and filter. Due to the better detergents and cleaning agents in the synthetic. After that, change as normal. If you do plan on running extened change intervals, you will need to change the filter at the regular intervals.

I use mobil 1 5 w 30, changed with a Fram filter every 5,000 KM... I top it up around 3,000 with another quart.

How do you do this?

The only solution I've seen is a multi filter system.

if you plan on changing the oil every 3000 miles, I suggest you stick with a good regular oil.

Just at the normal oil change interval, remove the used filter and put on a new one. Then top up the oil that was lost during the filter change.
