My first attempt at burning out. My freinds noticed both my tires were spinning. Then there were two pretty solid looking tire marks that went for the same length. As far as I knew. I had an open differential. No ABS, so no LS. Am I missing something here? Or do open differentials do that sometimes or what? Im confused.

And it's a Base 95 240.

Open Diffs do that sometimes but with S14's, nothing's certain. You could pick and choose any of a million options so it's very possible that your non SE has a VLSD.

The papers from the dealer show no mention of any differential, period. Every other option is listed there though. Also, one thing I did notice when I changed my clutch, there was writing on the transmission, and the differential. It was in yellow and it looks like the stuff they use to write stuff on parts at junkyards. They were just numbers though, nothing that made any sense. So am I safe in assuming that the previous owner may have switched or replaced these sometime before?

Also, there should be an orange sticker on the diff. Who knows if it's still there and/or not covered completely in grime.

Try doing doughnuts, if you can't you have no LSD

I can do straightline burnouts too with my open diff.

yeah, an open diff will still lay two straight lines if going straight. my s13 has open diff and does that, but try turning or sliding sideways you should only lay one line, but if you have lsd you will lay too. you can also (if you have a car lift) put the car up on the lift and spin one of the back tires. if they both spin from doing that then you have lsd if only one spins it is an open diff

I have a 95 base model with lsd also. To know for shore just jack up your rear end and put the car in nuetral, then spin rear tire. If both turn in the same direction you have lsd.

i thought viscous LSDs didn't work like that...? i thought it didn't lock up until there was enough force to make the viscous oil expand and catch...

Quote »From 240SX.org:How does a Viscous LSD(VLSD) work? each output shaft of the differential is tied together by a device known as a viscous coupling. This is basically two slotted discs that have a silicon fluid between them. If the discs are rotated at a speed that varies relative to each other this produces friction which heats the silicon fluid up. The silicon becomes more viscous as it's temprature rises. There will be a point where the silicon will become viscous enough to hold the two discs together (this is why the discs are slotted, it is so the silicon will have something to grip to).[/quote]i think this means that if unless you have a real LSD, just jacking it up and spinning a wheel won't cause the VLSD to lock up and spin both tires.

It is very easy and possible to make an open diff seem lsd in nature, when you have enough positive resistance on both wheels, the power is not instantly transfered to the path of least resistance.

nismofly hit the nail on the head, turn the wheel and try again. There will be a different result.
