Post

Ok, i probably posted another thread like this probably a couple of weeks back, but i'm too furious to find it right now considering that my engine is having problems.

My problem is, the starter is clicking, but the engine is not moving or cranking. It's not even struggling to turn on. All i hear is clicking everytime I turn the keys to ignition.

Now this is where I'm confused.

First, my friend said that it was my battery. He told me to get a new battery and test it out. He told me that everytime I turn on the ignition, I lose power. What battery should I get for a Black top SR20DET motor?

Second, my other friend said that it's the firing order. I don't know much about engineering, but I hope this little basic thought would do great.

Third, I called a mechanic who knows about SR20s. He then said that my problem might be my starter thats connected to the Transmission. Now, after all he explained all of that stuff. I got so confused, I don't want to keep throwing cash out there because I'm getting the wrong parts.

HELP!!!!

First and foremost, I'd like to thank the friend who thought it was the firing order. I needed a good laugh and that was just the ticket.

You need to determine exactly what is clicking. Have someone turn the key while you poke your head under the hood. You may hear several different clicks under there, but you need to make sure that you are hearing a good loud click coming from the area where the starter is. I could assume where that is on the sr, but I won't for fear of misleading you. The rest of this post assumes that you are indeed getting a click from the starter.

It could be the battery. It could be the starter. It could be a bad ground or power connection. It can't really be much else.

Pull a battery from another car and hook it up temporarily. If that doesn't change anything, then it's not the battery. That is simple enough to try.

Locate the starter and identify the two large terminals poking out the back of the solenoid. One of them may have a rubber guard on it. Take a wrench or other thick metal object and touch it to both of them simultaneously. You will know you've got it right because you'll get a spark or two. If the starter does something, then the solenoid is the problem and should be replaced. If it still does nothing, then your problem is left to be a power connection or ground problem, or a bad starter.

If your starter is clicking, it is getting power. Either you have a weak battery or your starter is shot. YOur starter is not turning over at all, right? First thing is to try to jump start. You can connect starter directly to battery. If it starts, this implies a relay or wiring is bad. btw, lots of things click when you give power to start circuit. make sure click is starter. check for 12v postive at starter connector.

Ugg. This can be so simple it's painfull. I had this problem on both my 300z and my 240. Both cases turned out to be a bad ground wire on the battery......in the Z's case it was a 6 year old battery with a flaking terminal (cleaned it and that battery still starts every time!!! Haha) causing a bad connection. In the 240's case it was a actual BENT connector that wouldn't tighten up enough to hold a secure ground. I just got a new ground wire for $3 at autozone......problem solved.

Also, try tapping the starter after it does it. If it starts afterwards then you have a bad starter. If it doesn't then CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!!!! You have a Nissan. Now search through your screwed up jungle of wires Nissan happily made for us and find a bad connection or short or bad relay or fuse.......Good luck......YOU'll NEED IT!
