hello everybody, im in the process of aquiring a 1996 240sx se, it needs some work, but i love to work on cars and i believe the price is right ($800). First issue is that the oil light is on, im prepared to do a pump at worst, but hopefully its not so severe, are there any related common problems that it might benefit me to know about. also when you shut the car off it makes a little "fart" noise?? thats a funny but good way to describe it, just to put it out there i need to fix this car good enough to last a year or so, in which time i will be saving mucho change to hopefull perform an sr20det swap

is it straight back exhaust? then the 'fart' noise can happen, some of my 240''s have done that before

Well - the oil light comes on when the car is low on oil or has low oil pressure. Either of these situations most likely show an engine that is in poor shape. Driving with low oil causes damage pretty quick. Low oil pressure can be a pump related problem, or it can be caused by excessive bearing clearances inside the engine.

Does the car smoke at all?

All in all, it may be a decent car for $800, but you should probably plan on a rebuild.

The fart noise I'd like to hear. All I can imagine is a car just ripping one and I'm sure that isn't it heh.

to my knowledge the car is completely stock, exhast in all, so as for the "fart" it sounds like the motor fires for a second more after you shut it off, i d/k its hard to explain, but soon as i save a lil more $$$ ill have it at my house, so ill better exam this thing, its previous owner was a chick who can barely drive so i gotta replace a fender, but i believe she has been good with changing the oil, filters, ect... her boyfreind is a chevyfag, and thinks it needs a pump, but also thinks its front wheel drive...... nuf said. Either way im practically robbing them on this one (in my opinion). I usually drive DSM's and YOTA's, but ive long lusted the 240's now im finally about to get one, this car looks decent to work on, im pretty good with motors, i built a few motors in my past, but im kinda hoping to make this one work long enough to save up for a new motor (hopefully sr20det)

throw an ls1 in there and forget about the ka24 unless u want to rebuild it and forge the bottom end, port the head, and throw a big *** turbo on there. they make no power or torque n/a.

just an FYI... SR or RB motor swaps will be difficult to get inspected/pass emissions if your state does those things.

1996 and newer cars require that the inspection/emissions station plug in to the OBDII port to check the computer. SR and RB motors don't have this port because they come from Japan where it's not required (OBDII is a USA thing).

if you had a 1995 or older an SR or RB swap is no problem because they don't do any computer inspections.

If your state does inspections then you're better off going KA-T or LS1 where you wont run into problems every year at inspection time.
