This might be a stupid question...but what is the difference between the red top and black top engines for the sr20det??

on an S13, nothing. The valve cover was changed for the 94-99 run. An S14 blacktop has a journal bearing T28 and VTC. An S15 blacktop has a ball bearing T28 and VTC

I believe, the s14 blacktop has a ballbearing turbo also, only s13 sr's had journal bearing turbos. The s13 blacktop is just newer and more expensive than the redtop.
