I did it again....
Here's the skinny on these little Kei trucks. They were designed to do work. Farming, deliveries, etc. They were never designed to be driven like Takumi delivering tofu which is essentially what I do sans tofu. This is a 660cc three cylinder SOHC engine that lays on its side and pumps out about 45hp at full scream. What's the redline? I have no idea, they don't come with tachometers. I put a tach in it and set the shift point at 6000 rpm because I can feel it just starting to drop off peak power. Every day this innocent little truck does not head out on surface roads to puttputt around delivering bread or something. No, some fat f*** who still thinks he's a race car driver gets in it and heads straight to the expressway. Traffic permitting he puts the hammer down, this being the hammer.
On unobstructed shallow grades this idiot bounces off 6k and holds steady at about 60-70MPH, did I mention 45hp? Why 70? Because it won't go 80!
Now said idiot has been noticing a disturbing trend. The motor has been lugging a bit at idle. Sort of a mild skip. The idiot starts to watch this and it gets worse. He notices something accompanying this behavior, a strange sound. He composes this little poem to recite as the noise gets louder. each day.
Once upon an afternoon's fury, while I hauled a**, weak and weary,
Over the terrible and intolerable volume of muffler roar —
While I nodded, toes a tapping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my camshaft lobe.
"'Tis a lifter" I muttered, "tapping out my wallet sure —
When I pay for this I'll have nothing more."
So, suspecting a poorly performing cylinder and not wanting to admit what I knew was likely the cause I changed the plugs. Holy sheep s*** on a cracker, how the hell was this truck still running? The ground straps were sharpened to fangs and the mixture looked a bit lean. Now I am suspecting detonation, not lifters. I put the plugs in, no change.
The next day I left work early and went junkyard hopping. I still maintained hope I would be able to fix the problem before the motor popped. I found one and put a deposit down on it. I pick it up Saturday. I took today off so as to save my truck the abuse of driving any unnecessary miles, but I got called in. On the way home Igor was really chugging. It sounded like one cylinder was totally gone, but being a possessor of gargantuan testicular proportions I hit the expressway. I made it down the the expressway and coming off the ramp to the stoplight the engine was just bucking. I had about two miles to the house and I had to time the lights so as not to come to a stop, but I still had to keep revving it. As I got closer to home I began calculating my pushing potential over the remaining distance and I crossed what I believed to be the line of do it/can't do it so I was relieved a bit. I made the final turn down the road and the truck was sputtering now and as I coasted into the driveway it made the final shudder and died.
Some vehicles are just blessed an while I have had to do the timingbelt, that was my fault for not changing it before such a high odometer reading. Yes, I had to replace the shifter cable, but it gave me a week of warning before it failed and I didn't heed it. The wheel bearing that's grinding is my fault because I didn't properly seat it back in when I pulled the hubs to do the long studs. the CV joints looked bad long before the boots failed and now the joints are FUBARed because I am lazy. Whatever just took out the motor, I still suspect a lifter, gave me enough warning that, this time at least, I acted and had another motor ready to go. If not for having to go into work I would have got the new motor back before the old one gave out. I'll try to borrow a buddies Suzuki Carry, another Kei truck to bring the new bullet home. I'll probably have to ride the bus home after returning his truck. Oh, I have a job interview Monday too. I'm not exactly sure how I am going to get to that.
This little truck is charmed. Igor busts his a** for me day in and day out and I pay very little love back. Well homie, it's time for me to step up. That....
