ignition timing

how do you set that? just on the disributor like a normal car? or i heard you have to do it electronically? car is an s13 ka24de

unplug tps set idle to 700 rpm then set timing through distributor while checking it with timing gun on the crank pulley (20 degrees)

thanks cause somebody told me it was done through ecu codes? made no sense. maybe he was talkin bout the CAS?
