Just wondering if anybody had tried anything like this:

http://www.3800performance.com...S-IST

Is there anything like that that would work on our cars. I would really like to be able to monitor and have an accurate ignition timing display. Any ideas, I think you can do this with the emanage and blitz r-vit, is there any way to do it cheaper?

I use this:

http://www.technosquareinc.com/mdm.htm

It plugs right into the consult port so there is no wiring, takes like 2 seconds to plug it in and thats it. Monitors alot more than timing.

Nice, but still expensive, is there anyway to just set up a gauge or somthing?

wow, it looks like they're discontinuing the MDM-100...that really sucks...

I think the only other way to monitor timing without using the CONSULT port, is to calculate it directly based on the crank position sensor and ignition timing signal... I don't know of any gauges that are this capable.

I was wondering if there anything that taps into the consult port but just displays timing.

Not that I'm aware of, commercially anyways, that's a pretty specefic application. Wouldn't be cheap either: to do it right you would need a microprocessor to transmit data to the ECU, receive/display it, and at the same time, juggle communication so the CONSULT port is available for other devices. If you weren't worried about the last point, it's a relatively simple microprocessor application.

OK, well I just realized that the problem is that I need to get somthing that will work on a CA18DET. Which didn't use the Consult, and doesn't support the Consult tool at all, so tapping into the consult port is out of the question. Are there any other ways to do this?

Timing light with a video camera focused on marks and inside monitor.

Don't laugh..............actually the Consult accuracy depends on setting the timing correctly manually at say 15 Deg BTDC.
