Ignition systems???

Hello everyone, I think my distributor on my '96 240 is going bad (or something inside of it like the power transistor) and I am going to have to replace it. So I was thinking I might buy a new ignition system like the MSD or something, but then I realized I didn't know anything about these. Are these systems good? What all is involved with them? What do they replace on the car? What do you guys recommend?
