OK i got this truck for free and i cant get it to spark. Its a L16 not sure if its a 521 or a 610.  Looks like it has a new distributer on it. i had to rewire the coil 12v to the pos and neg going to the dist and it started up for just a bit and now it dont want to fire.If i leave the ignition on and touch the wire from the coil to the distributer it shows spark but if i move the dist 30 degrees or so it dont get spark at all.Is it possible my coil is bad and if so how can i check it.

G'day, Firstly- Do you understand how the spark system works? Simply put - A coil builds up charge  when it has current  flow  and  when  you  break  the  circuit  the  coil tries  to  keep  the  current  flowing  by  inducing a high  voltage.  The  lobe  in the  dizzy  sets  the  period  for  the  circuit  to  be  broken  by  opening  the  points.  The  points are adjusted  for  fine tuning. Knowing there are two actual coils in a "coil" you can simply check across the coil windings using a multimeter looking for resistance. If it sparks then you turn the dizzy and it does not it sounds more like a timing problem more so than a coil problem. If you need more info just ask.

Good luck.

did you check to see if your ballast resistor is good? it is that little white retangular box next to the coil on the left fender. i had the same problem but at first i had no juice going to the coil and had to print out wiring  diagram of my 521 pickup and found out that the previous owner had the wires to the coil wired backwards and then i did a complete tune-up on mine. so lets see here what i did to it to get it there

1. replace ballast resistor

2. replace coil

3. replace points

4. replace condensor

5. replace distributor cap & rotor

6. replace spark plugs & wires

7. replace ignition switch

8. replace fuses

that should get solve your problem

[align=left][font="arial"]I think i have a spark issue.  my '70 521 will start up and run about 10 to 15 sec then die out.  Would the points be a good place to start?  I am pretty sure that i am getting plenty fuel.  Any help would be great.  thanks

welcome to the board....
it's usually best to start your own thread and post as much info as to what you are working with for others to help you out....
it does sound like the float bowl is running out of fuel...check the accelerator pump?
here's some pages to read that might help you out:

[font="arial"]I GOT IT!!!! It turns out that the points were bad even though they were sparking apparently it was not enough.  It is purring like a kitten now.  Not bad for a little truck that has not been started in about 2 yrs.
