I got a new ignition module (ptu, whatever you want to call it) and in the box it says that before applying the new module you should apply thermal grease (compound, also whatever you want to call it) to the heatsink. So I have 2 questions actually.

1. Is it actually necessary to use this compound.

2. If so - Should I use conductive or non-conductive grease?

Thanks guys.

not required

newer style PTU's do not have a heatsink, check where you got it from.
