I'd try mochaduc's suggestion. It could honestly be as simple as urging the steering wheel to either direction.
Also, sometimes the computer could take a little long to recognize the transponder chip (whether the correct one is present or it inadvertently fell during the battery replacement).
In this case, remove the metal blade from rhe key fob and insert it fully into the tumbler. You should immediately be able to turn the key to ON & ACC if the steering wheel is not locked.
