interestingly I had this problem today while installing my TT.
if you take the plastic covers off of the stearing column and look at your ignition, just behind the black button you have to pres to remove the key, there is a small switch (mine was brown). this has to be in the up position to remove the key. when you turn the ignition on, the switch goes to the down position. you can manualy move the swith up with the car running to remove the key (assuming you have something like my TT to keep the car running). not that I think about it, you might be able to get to the switch just by removing the small plastic bezel that surounds the tumbler, rather than removing the entire stearing column cover.
in any case, I noticed some small (black and red) wires leading to the brown switch, and tried unpluging them. It allowed me to remove the key without having to manualy operate the switch.
I dont know if this is an aoutomatic trans issue only, or if all cars have it. I converted my car from auto to manual when I did my swap.
