if its an OEM kinda part..then its a (just works part)

they do make aftermarket ignition controllers that allow for advancing and or retarding the ingnition and allso changing the fireing order..its been a while but on some V8 race engines..they change the fireing order from oem to a more powerfull and balanced order using a controll modual..i dont know if there is a specific book on it so you can read up on it..may be another nicco head has some more info to add to my post..hope this helps some.

unplug the wire coming from the cap to the coil and hook in a spark plug

If you take a test light and touch to the ignition side of the coil and have somebody crank the engine over the test lite will faintly blink. This is the ignition module triggering the coil to fire. No blink, just a constant glow, bad ignitor. Does the engine run or do you have a no start?
