Anyone know the specs or parameters for normal operation on the Ignition Coils on a 99q45. I tried opening the fsm el section and my file is corrupt for some reason. I r&r all eight recently due to a missfire after replacing one at a time due to what seem to be a boot short. I am trying to figure out if I can help some poor guy with my coils or save them for a rainy day.

Thanks

Hello!I have a 2000 Q and was recently told that I need all 8 coils replaced. Did you do this yourself? Was it easy? Anything we should know when attempting this ourselves? Do you still have your unused ones? Any info at all would be helpful. Thanks, Hiedi

You never need to replace ALL 8. The problem is locating the one (or maybe two) bad coil(s).

What are your symptoms? Is it giving you a code? If you can isolate one cylinder, you can just replace that coil. The shop wants to do them all because they know that'll solve the problem.

The shop doesn't want to chance that you will end up coming back every 30-90 days when another coil fails and then another and another.

They know that eventually all or the majority of the coils may fail.

And with a FSM you can easily replace any defective ones. Understand it is cheaper to replace them all than to have a Senior Technician spend the time to run the diagnostics. You can do it with a decent OBD II scanner with memory and some careful observations.

Just buy a handful of coils and keep them handy...

Yeah, every week to two weeks it will run rough for a few seconds then the engine light comes on. It is code P1320 ( ignition signal, primary) with no other codes attached. It has left me stranded once a week ago at the store. Had it towed to my mechanic. He ohmed each coil individually and they were testing fine. Drove car for another week just fine then engine light came back on. Scanned the ECM at Checker. Of course, same code. Got frustrated and desperate so I took it to dealer. They were able to somehow isolate the problem to two coils misfiring but the misfire occurs so quickly that the cars computer cannot detect which coil is the problem. $2600 to R&R all 8 coils from Infiniti of Superstition Springs. I about passed out after hearing that quote. I then attempted to trade car in at another dealer to wash my hands of it but I will lose about 4k on my trade in value. I started looking for coils online and found all 8 new in package on EBAY for $522. They are Hitachi brand not OEM but have money back guarantee. What do you think about replacing with non-factory coils and also about replacing them ourselves? From what I have heard asking around it is not a difficult task, you just have to be sure to not mix up the firing order of the coils/plugs. Absolutely any info would help. ThxAlso, is there a service manual that might tell us how to go about it?

changing the coils is easy, but it takes time if it's your first time. Have you changed the plugs yet? if you changed the plugs, then you have taken off the coils. I had the same problem, and what I did was I went to the closest junk yard, and bought 8 working coils and replaced them all. Now I have my 8 old coils sitting at home, but dont know which one is bad.

We just did a major 70k mile service on it a month ago at a repair shop, not by ourselves. The plugs were changed then. Do the coils sit directly underneath the plugs? I thought about the junkyard thing, but I didn't think there would be a Q45 sitting in a junkyard and thought it would be a waste of time. I will start calling around. Any special tools you need to replace them?
