Ignition circuits, will it fire?

I have been dealing with a no spark issue on my maxima but something I wonder about, will a bad ignition module cause the coil to not fire at all even if you have a spark plug connected directly to the coil wire coming out of the top of the coil?

The reason I ask is becuase I wonder if I have been troubleshooting this issue all wrong. If a ignition module goes bad, will that cause a no-spark issue at all times?

Will a bad rotor/cap cause a no-spark condition?
