If you smell oil it might be a problem

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Had the local dealer change the oil last week prior to a 1000 mile road trip. Got back from the trip Sunday and I started smelling oil while I was running some errands later in the day. When I got home I popped hood and found oil on the engine cover and hood insulation. The source was easy to find, the oil filler cap was missing; luckily during my trip it had stayed on until I got home. So I fabricated a crude cap and taped it on as best I could.

Today I was able to scheduled a telecommute day and take the car to the dealer. A tech quickly confirmed the oil cap was missing and was no where to be found in the car. So he clean up under the hood and taped my homemade plug back on. The service salesrep told me the car was ready and I needed to come back tomorrow because they had to "special order" a new oil filer cap. Having some experience with computer logic I suggested they replace the cap with a cap from one of their cars. It was hard to discount the logic of my suggestion so 5 minutes later I was on my way with an oil filler cap; thus avoiding another trip to the dealer tomorrow.

So sometimes all you have to do is ask for good service but the more skeptical among you might ask why?

Sometimes people just don't think of the obvious solution.

Was it a "quick lube" or did you leave it there?

Just personally curious.

Crap happens sometimes and the true test of the customer service of a dealer is how they own their problems.

I like the lack of common sense they had too...so many cars and no caps to spare... oh well at least you got one. Hopefully they cleaned it well.

Left the car and took a loaner. I had an alignment done the same visit; hit some new street car tracks hard and tweaked the toe a bit. I wasn't really that upset, I have wrenched on a lot of cars over the years and I have had a few of my own oops events.
