OK, I would say that I would rather pull out a tooth with a pair of pliers than to remove my headliner, again. I was installing a stereo and already had most of my interior pulled out, so I figured WTH? Let's try to remedy this sagging headliner issue. NO! STOP! DON'T DO IT!
What happens is the foam backing that the original material once had was dried and turned to a sticky dust over the years from heat. When you peel the material off, that sticky dust is left behind on the backing. It is impossible to remove completely and the spray-adhesive won't stick very well with it there. Also, if you do scrape it off, like I did (took me 4 hours with a razor blade and a lot of Acetone), then there is no foam for the material, so when you spray the adhesive on the material, it soaks through and stains it. Also, it doesn't sit flat. You see every little uneven part of the backing. Should I have purchased some new material? In hindsight, yes. You need the new foam to make this work. Would it have looked good after I was done with new material? Absolutely not. It takes a skilled hand to adhere a large piece of material to a backing that has bends and recesses, etc. I will NEVER attempt this again. My headliner looks like absolute shiiite. I will likely be paying someone to fix it, later on. Right now, I'm not going to worry about it. I'm just here to warn you not to attempt a fix on your headliner.
Take it to someone. Whatever they are asking simply isn't enough.
