Wednesday last week I had a whine at start up that eventually went away. It was not dependent on AC on or off. It changed with RPM. I guessed waterpump. Listened with a screw driver and it did sound like it was coming from the water pump.

Called Infiniti on Thursday noon they were out of cars. Called again on Friday early am they were out of loaner cars again. Made an appointment on Monday 9am.

Driving home on Friday I heard a loud bang and the battery light and brake light lit up.

I limped it into a hospital parking lot and popped the hood. The drivers side idler pulley was gone!

I walked back to where I heard the noise and recovered it from the middle of the road. The bearing was completely siezed. I left it until Sunday. On Sunday I went to a Nissan dealer and Infiniti dealer that have a parts department that was open. There were no idler pulleys in all of AZ. I went to Autozone and bought a pulley for a Maxima that has the same bearing in it. Pressed the new bearing our of the new pulley. Pressed the old bearing out of the old pulley. Pressed the new bearing into the old pulley. I had to pound the stud out of the old pulley and damaged some of the threads. I used a rethreading tool on the old stud and on the timing chain cover of the motor. I threaded the old pulley back onto the car. The pulley still floated up and down the stud. There is a spacer that I could not find that left the car at 6000 rpm.

I had the car towed to a Infiniti dealership. 2 days and $560 later I have a new idler pulley and belt. The pulley is only $120 so if you hear a whine from your motor you can save $440 and replace it yourself if you can find the pulley.

Thanks for the tip! So you replaced the entire pulley assembly instead of just the bearings? I guess all that racing is starting to catch up with you...

I originally wanted to just replace the bearing... the correct bearing is in the pulley in the picture. The pulley cost $22 at Autozone.

I was missing a spacer though and looking at the Nissan/Infiniti parts counter computer the spacer is not listed so I was not sure if there was a spacer or not. You can see the bolt is thicker at the top where it fits snug inside the bearing. Then it tapers down before the threads. I was not sure if the bolt was adheared to the pulley or if there was a spacer that kept the pulley in line with the rest of the system.

After getting my car back yesterday yes there is a spacer.

I'm at 98,277 miles that bearing did its job. While I had the belt off I spun all the other (except crank) pulleys and they all turned free without noise.

$280 in labor for the belt and pulley isn't bad but I could have done it myself if the part would have been instock somewhere in AZ. Besides driving the G37 sedan makes me appreciate how fast the G35 Sedan really is. That 7spd has such SHORT gears. 105mph in the G35 in 3rd gear 105mph in the G37 takes 5th gear. I did get 23mpg out of the G37 I am averaging 19mpg in my G35.

What 5th gear for 100mph ? With the 7 speed transmission?

The end of 3rd grear is about 100 in my G37x ... if I'm on the highway I'm above 120 in 4th gear...

I had a loaner for a week in December and it was 5th to get to 105? Didn't have time or room in the last one.

IDK, I think the 7spd makes it FEEL faster but your really just surging with all the gear swaps. Dragtimes has a Stock 07 G35 sedan running a 13.538 at 101.580 mph. The fastest Stock G37 is 13.700 at 101.29 mph. Its close enough to be the driver but you see this trend repeated in road testing too. With the 37 you pick up 22 hp but hid it in two more gears.

Car and Driver has the G35 sedan 0-60 in 5.1 , 13.7 at 104 mph
Car and Driver has the G37 sedan 0-60 in 5.2, 13.8 at 104 mph
