I was on my way to pick up my friend in Redondo so we can get ready for our show tonight. On the way there merging onto the 710 from the 105 my hood decided to fly up on me. I was going about 70mph. My hood flew up and bent back so far it cracked the top of my windshield, dented my roof, knocked apart that little console thing for the map lights/sunglass holder, dislodged both vanity mirrors, cracked my hood in multiple places, and tore the top part of my fenders.

I thought I'd be fine without latches and was planning on getting them anyway but it wasn't a priority. After I got my car home I looked into it further and the stock latch and latch on the hood are perfectly intact. I'm not sure what exactly happened, it's as if it just decided to open. No locking mechanism broke which surprised me quite a bit. There was no injury so I'm thankful for that, not many cars on the freeway and since I was already in the slow lane I got over to the emergency lane quite easily.

However the map lights and stuff hit me in the forehead when they got knocked loose, nothing major though just a little pain on my eyebrow. And without further adieu, here's the damage.

Absolutely brutal.

The fenders don't look too bad.

Maybe you can take off the head liner and try pushing out the roof dents a bit? Won't be too noticeable since it's the roof...

that sucks balls!..

I've had a cf hood on my car and hopefully that doesn't happen.

question though...is the thickness of the latch hook on the hood the same as the stock or is it skinnier?

maybe that can add to why it slipped out.

OUCH  ... Rob.V Sorry to see and hear about this. This same thing happend to me while I was driving my Jetta down to Willow Springs a few years back to have fun on the track up there. I as well had a VIS CF hood. I was going down the road toward the track doing 120-130 MPH and WAPPPP. Luckily it's a 4 lane highway 2 lanes in each direction divided by about 15 feet of dirt and bushes. Hardly any cars and it looks like a desert. Hood broke, windshield, hood brackets and some roof damage as well. After that I said "NO MORE CF HOOD'S FOR ME." That and its a pain because you have to re-clear them every few years or else they get a yellowie dull color.

Ya I'm glad I was able to maneuver my way off the freeway without harming anybody else. At first I thought I hit somebody but very soon realized it was just my hood being stupid.

I will be taking apart the headliner and trying to pop it back, but there are two little dents in it that WON'T pop out, that's what I'm worried about. My mom said if we need a new roof for whatever reason we can try and get a sunroof put in :mike

Chris, ya I have horrible luck with my car. In all honesty I can't keep up with maintenance but I won't be driving it for awhile so maybe I can actually start saving to get it all fixed and look good again.

Fenders aren't bad but still damage that can't just be pryed back into place. I'm pretty sure the cf latch and stock latch are the same size but I'll check again real soon (I will be putting the stock hood on again in a couple days).

I'll keep you guys updated on progress but it looks like it's gonna be a while until my car is operable again. I'm mostly bummed because I started saving to go to school in San Diego in the next few months, but this has set me back quite a bit.

Thank you for the offer, I may take you up on that depending if my insurance is going to cover the damage. If we (me and parents) have to pay out of pocket then I am most likely just gonna put my stock hood back on, I'll let you know in a couple days when we find out.

Ya this surprised the hell out of me, I have topped out my car (112) on a few different occasions with this hood and nothing out of the ordinary happened. My hood always shook on the highway but I didn't think it would ever fly open, especially not when just cruising at traffic speed.

But yes I do advise you put those latches on ASAP, my hood is done for so I'm going to sand it and paint it so it looks decent and then beat the s*** out of it :rotfl

I was scared about that as well. IIRC when my ex's dad hit my car their insurance (Allstate) said they would give me money for a new bumper but not an aftermarket one (I have Stillen's). I talked to my insurance provider (State Farm) today and they said that they will have it estimated but I am covered.

Haven't mentioned the hood but I think the least they will do is give the amount for a new stock hood. Doesn't seem like they would dismiss the whole incident because it was all due to my hood, which is after market, because the hood's latch isn't broken at all. Something else went wrong and I'd really like to know what.

I am getting estimates from two shops tomorrow and having State Farm look it over and see what they can do. I also sent an email to Ryan from ED who helped me purchase the hood and let him know of the situation. I don't blame their company in ANY way, like I said other the hood wasn't faulty. Either the stock locking mechanism for the hood or maybe just the fact I don't have pins could have been at fault, who knows.

But hopefully my car is fixed by the beginning of next week maybe the end.

Went to a shop to get an estimate today. He is a friend of my mom's husband and supposedly does really good work. He said he can help me out and get everything fixed correctly. However I got the impression that he is trying to just repair the parts instead of replacing them, if the insurance is covering the damage (which they agreed to) then I don't want them fixed I want new ones.

I have a question for you Phenom, How did you end up liking your new fenders ??? Did they fit correctly, any issues along the way ???

I am going to a shop in Costa Mesa (Wet Works Garage) tomorrow to go see what they say about the situation, 1st guy estimated around 5k but I really don't see how that's realistic unless he's charging like 2-3k for labor Which judging by the part of town it was in is highly unlikely.

I don't want him cheaping out on my repair job so he can keep an extra buck or two I guess is what I'm worried about. Plus if I get a decent amount and Ryan at ED is able to help me out enough I will be buying a new CF hood (with latches) and fenders.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out tomorrow

btw, drove my car for the first time today since this happened (last Saturday), it was real nice and I accelerated down the street and haven't heard my car in a while so got all excited again. Then my friend reminded me that my hood may fly up

Although I technically had the ED fenders but had to do a field destroy on them because of fitment all I can say is both version of the fenders are made of fiberglass. Whatever shop you take it to I'm sure they will be doing a lot of bondo and sanding to get them straight.

Ya I was hoping that with the new design they would be a little more precise on the fitment. We'll see what happens I guess

i look at it like this if you want them get them i saw darryls old ones and they were totally diff but like he said you will have to play with them a lil to make em a good fit plus if the shops retarted "like the one who did mine" make sure they fill in the bubbles as in paint it then notice the spots and sand them. I didnt have an issue with fitment n they look badass so idk i like em :mike

I do want the fenders, I like the old design better but the new ones look good too. I think I'm going to hold out on them though, I think I'm just going to have my hood fixed a little and then painted. We'll see what happens.

Wet Works Garage (got a flyer on my car at the Stillen show) seems like they do some good work and I wanted to take my car to them, but they WILL NOT answer my call. I've called Wednesday, Friday, and today. Haven't left a message but thought they'd pick up one of my many calls (all at different times).
