Which would you pick

Im thinking a precision pt67 aka t04r , or a precision pt70 aka gt4294.

your thoughts.

ive done the math and for a low boost setup (14psi) my choice would be the hks t51r or the garret equivalent the 'small' gt42.

I would agree with that but then you could ask Garrett

I'm really happy with my Master Power T70 w/ .68 turbine A/R. I would like to try a smaller A/R for my rear mount to compare but I'm in boost pretty quickly as is. If you used this same turbo up front I'm sure it would be awesome. It's capable of much more boost than I can currently use with my stock MAF and injectors.

If you haven't ever looked at Bullseye Power turbos, check them out. A friend of mine who builds ridiculously high HP cars has started putting them on pretty much everything and going away from Garrett. Most of the ones I've seen at his place are the size of a basketball. I'm sure something from Garrett would work awesome but these other turbos are sweet. I don't know enough about them so I'm going completely off what I've seen from him.

Turbo was $550 purchased about 2 years ago. I ended up getting my Tial BOV and Tial WG from them as well. I think they also go by "Mike Turbo". The guy I talked to was Hong. He was pretty helpful if I remember correctly.

Part number for my turbo is #810015

I just looked at the site and the new part number for the same specs as mine is #950022-1137 for $682.50http://partsexpressonline.com/...88981

you're most likely right, its precision that uses garrett parts.

Funny, I've been thinking about a garrett GT3788R for my Z next winter. Low boost (6-7psi) and rediculous response. Log Manis, twin scroll housing, mounted on the rear side of the engine where the stock VH starter is. Stock injectors, Stock MAF, and Nistune. Probably make 450 crank horsepower without breaking a sweat.

On a larger displacement engine, your biggest enemy is going to be back pressure. Don't even think about a T3 frame, you have to got T4, maybe even T6, with at least a 1.0 a/r on the hot side, otherwise you're gonna have a much much higher than 1:1 pressure ratio. I like the GT42r with the 1.4 a/r hot side for a good street turbo for this sized engine, or the BW equivalent.

I have a T04z 1.06 a/r (I think). That has 2psi at 2000rpm and hit full boost before 3000rpm and that is with a 50mm wg without ebc. 280rwkw at 6000rpm (with 35" very heavy agressive mud tyres). And that is without switching the VVT. Redline still at 6000rpm due to running factory injectors. I have top feeds for it but have to do manifold to make them fit. At that time we are looking at dropping boost back a bit and raising rev limit to 7000 and switching the cams. The goal is 300rwkw at 7000rpm on 98. At present it is on avgas which is just a PITA and rusts everything way too much.

We looked at alsorts of options and considered running a smaller turbo but this spools so quick why would you bother with smaller and the extra heat that would cause?

Sorry to bump this but I have a question. I am planning on running a vh45de with a turbo as well. I have a Holset hx52 sitting here with less than a 1000 miles on it off a drag supra. Need your opinion on this turbo. When would I see intial and max boost on the vh45de? It is huge and has a divided exhaust housing with a 22cm stamped in. Thanks in advance.

I do not have a good understanding of turbo maps. I can take and post pictures of it. It has a 5" v-band exhaust outlet and 3" intake inlet.

I agree, for the money this is a great turbo for a fairly wide range of applications. Are there better fits out there... probably... but for the price a MPT T70 is dang hard to beat.

Holset don't release compressor maps.

vqpwrd240- it's massive, a 22cm^2 housing is too big.It will be very laggy. I never did any calculations for the HX50, but the older version, a H2E (9551BA) I found to be a laggy choice for the VH being inside 70% efficiency @60Lb/min @ 10psi but wouldn't spool until the engine reached 35lb/min (4500rpm?)

I think the obvious issue of power goals was overlooked in the creation of this thread. When listing a turbo you are interested in please list your power goals also as the turbo choice will vary hugely based on that.

FYI to the person who said HKS T51R SPL, i've seen them at work in a couple RX7's and I have to say they are quite a nice turbo, I think the SPL has roller bearings rather than the ball bearings but don't hold me to that.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the turbonetics GT-K range. Ceramic coated exaust housing and from the videos I've seen they maintain a decent RPM off throttle and take longer to spool down meaning better off throttle response and boost faster when your back on the throttle.

Back pressure was a good thing to mention as well, for a 4.5L your really going to need quite a large exhaust housing as well as exhaust piping, due to the capacity even with a fair bit of back pressure you will still get good power out of it but running two decent sized turbos with 3"+ exhaust piping will get you a lot less back pressure. With a single set up for road use its really hard to run anything larger than 4" exahaust piping on most cars but even with back pressure as long as its designed well enough that should still be able to pass 800hp out of the engine.

My personal preference is to run a tapered pipe off the turbo 3-5" in length up to the size of the exhaust pipe as this helps increase exhaust gas speed and always gives you the option of running a huge dump pipe than splitting it into a dual 3" or 4" system for the rest of it.

At the end of the day its not exactly needed but it does reduce back pressure substantially. For powergoals under 500hp a 3-3.5" is fine for over 500 i'd be looking at a 3.5-4" to fend of at least a decent amount of back pressure.

Well here is something I found that may or may not be right. Please give your opinions.

Turbine housing areas:

3 cm2 = 0.14 A/R4 cm2 = 0.23 A/R5 cm2 = 0.32 A/R6 cm2 = 0.41 A/R7 cm2 = 0.49 A/R8 cm2 = 0.57 A/R9 cm2 = 0.65 A/R10 cm2 = 0.73 A/R11 cm2 = 0.81 A/R12 cm2 = 0.89 A/R14 cm2 = 0.97 A/R15 cm2 = 1.05 A/R16 cm2 = 1.13 A/R17 cm2 = 1.29 A/R19 cm2 = 1.37 A/R20 cm2 = 1.45 A/R21 cm2 = 1.53 A/R22 cm2 = 1.61 A/R23 cm2 = 1.69 A/R24 cm2 = 1.77 A/R25 cm2 = 1.85 A/R

Also, the Holset I have came off a 9 second Supra. I would hope that the VH would be able to get this thing going much better than a 3.0 Supra engine. As far as HP goals, I would love to be above 600 HP with the option of going higher. Thanks so far guys.

Here is a link for Holset power ranges that could be helpful.

http://www.turbomustangs.com/t...e.jpg

It shows that the HX55 power range is between 400 to 600 HP.

the problem with the above is it doesn't state what version the above turbo's are. for example the 6 blade hx35 flows considerably more than the 7 blade which flows more than the 8 blade. The other issue is they may be a 600 hp turbo on a 2L 4g63, but may choke at 400hp on a 4.5L.

I'd forget about the supra being 3L, it's a drag car so things like throttle response, lag, rpm etc are all very different to a streetable setup

I talked to a Holset dealer that works with turboing Mustangs today. He said something along the lines that the HX55's come with specific exhaust housing that cannot be changed. I let him know about the 22cm^2 housing on mine and he said that a 22cm^2 on the HX55 is right at a 1.0 a/r. The 4.6L Mustangs are seeing 5 to 10 psi with .8 and .9 a/r between the 2500 and 3000 rpm range. He did say there may be a little lag but you could still get good usable power at 3500/4000 and on. He said to go ahead and use it for the power I want to make. Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing that info and please post back with how the turbo performs on a VH45. How much are the HX55's brand new?

I'm a fan of Holset idea. I've been seriously researching the Holset turbos from my KA-T project. Maps are difficult to find.

The thing I like the most about Holset turbos is the price. They're EXTREMELY inexpensive to buy (used and even new), and have rebuilt (most local turbo diesle or big rig shops can do it). They also come in many sizes. Granted, they may not be ball bearing or ceramic, but they sure are durable.

I don't really have anything else to add. I think they're a great option to explore before spending big bank on a turbo charger.
