how do you do that?

the plug on the transmission is there, but I don't have any of the wiring.

right around about the level of your bell housing there should be a two wire plug. look at the fsm for colors. if not, look at the fsm for the colors and trace the harness/wires. once you find them, solder and heat shrink sum wires in.

which are the harness wires that I need to hook up the two leads to though, according to some pinouts, the vss wire is 32, yellow and green stripe.

but what about the other lead? my speedo is out of the car, so I need to figure out how to wire that properly as well. does the vss signal go straight to the ecu or does it go to the odometer first?

check for a wiring diagram. there are two wires to the speedo, then one to the ecu

Which year 240 are u referring to? When I wired up my R33 GTS cluster on my Zenki, the VSS color wires for me are Red w/yellow stripe and Red on the 240 side of the harness coming directly from the VSS. I found out the Red w/yellow stripe lead went into the signal side of the speedo by tracing the printed circuit on the s14 cluster. There should be 4 screws holding the speedo, each for P2, Signal, 12v and Ground "or 3 screws for the s13 cluster as it gets its power internally in the cluster". The other wire should be ground and you can also find that by tracing the printed circuit. Don't ground the VSS lead to the chassis. Ground it to the speedo. Yes the speed input goes to the cluster first and converts the signal from AC to DC "correct me if Im wrong", outputs the converted signal to the ecu from the P2 connector on the back side of the cluster.

I have the speedo from an 89 240sx.

the ecu is a 92 auto ecu. since the cluster is out of the dash, I'm just going to put ring terminals on the original crews that were on the pcb and use a nut to secure them and then a computer standoff washer to crew to the back of the gauge. in this case, I need to run the two vss wires directly to the speedo and use that for sig and gnd. 12v from a switched source and P2 is hooked up to the ECU?

if so, sweet. I could butcher a connector off of somewhere and test it out.

edit: to clarify, I am attempting to use the sohc speedometer guts in my datsun 510, so I need to wire up the vss from scratch, whoever did this wiring harness (I bought it used) had eliminated the connectors going to the transmission since they used a mechanical pinion. I'm trying to use all electronic, so I can hook up the Consult port.

Sorry let me correct myself on one of the sentences. I looked at my 93 s13 cluster and it does seem to have 4 screws on the back of the speedo. In the wiring diagram it shows only 3 that are wired to externally and the 4th screw gets it power internally from the cluster ignition input witch powers everything else. But that's not important right now. Yes P2 needs to be wired the ecu. And the 12v screw, wired to the ignition input. sohc and dohc clusters may be a little different, but double check with a wiring diagram before u power anything as I am referring to what I know, since I only played around with dohc clusters. lmk.If you need a dohc cluster with uncut cluster harness, I got one for sale.

my cluster was dirt cheap I'm gonna try and make that one work first before I buy another one. I'm butchering them anyways so all I'm looking at is the pcb so it works with the KA. are there any digital odometers that will hook up with the speedo?

if worst comes to worst, I fry the pcb if I hook up the vss wrong.... I just wont hook up 2P

If it's a 2 wire speedo, one is ground and one is signal, it doesn't matter what orientation they are in...

it wont matter if i connect them backwards? anyone know which wires are which? I didnt get a good look at the speedo cog...

Nope, doesn't matter which wire you connect to which..

You may be right but I just like to wire things up the way it came from factory. I just do it to sleep easy at night.
