...which one would you pick? Yahoo published a cool article about some of the most iconic and (surprisingly) powerful ones. Of the ones listed, which one would you pick as your favorite?

#1 2006-13 Charger
Image

#2 1969 Dodge Polara
Image

#3 Caprice
Image

#4 1975 Chevy Nova
Image

#5 1977-78 Dodge Monaco
Image

#6 83-93 Mustang
Image

#7 '94-96 Caprice
Image

#8 91-02 camaro
Image

#9 2013 Taurus
Image

#10 2010 Ford Raptor
Image

Here's a link to the article with all the horsepower / torque / performance numbers.
http://autos.yahoo.com/news/the-10-cool ... tml?page=1

So, which one would you choose? For me, the 2010 Raptor would be my first pick, followed closely by the '69 Polara. A huge 4 door sedan that can go 147 mph on a high-banked oval IN THE 1960s is pretty bad-a** in my book. :dblthumb:

I used to see a couple of these when I live in Miami.

Never saw it haul a** though.

One time on I-75 I watched a state trooper in a B4C Camaro haul some major a** from a 60mph roll. Must've had somewhere to be.
So out of the list, I pick the Camaro. Had a friend who had a retired one. He crashed it -bad- and walked away from it without more than a few bumps and a bruise. The cops and med teams on the scene were flabbergasted.
Image
Anyway, the scariest thing about them was that they had radar guns mounted on the back seat in the hatch pointed out the glass, and another pointed out from near the drivers side A-pillar. After tagging you, they could come get you in a split second.

However, my very favorite thing about them might be this sticker:

For realistic police cars, that are or have been in service here in the US i'd pick the 87-93 Police Interceptor Mustang LX 5.0 first and foremost. I had one and loved the thing.

Secondly, i'd pick the new Caprice as long as it was a V8 powered one.

I drove a '96 (I think) Lumina Police Package for a year... 2-door, Recaro seats, and a healthy V6. Wish I had kept track of it and bought it at auction - That car was deceptively awesome!

I had three P71 Vics. The '94 was cushy, silent, and fast. The '01 was my favorite, but only because it was black. I bought another '01 (in white) for my kid to drive, which he promptly destroyed within a couple months.

Jeep sent us a pair of specially-outfitted Cherokees in late '99. 4-liter, stripped out, raised suspension, wider tires, bash bars, and some go-faster goodies... Those were super cool, and fun to drive.

I'm with Chris, though. I'd like the early-90's Fox-body LX with the Interceptor equipment, please. :)

IN 1982 my Dad purchased a 'special' Ford Mustang GT. It had a 4 barrel carb, engine built by another company from outside the Ford factory, leather, headers and true dual exhaust with a X pipe. Functional hood scoop, Goodyear Gator Back GT rubber, 3:73 gear a locker, traction bars and close ratio 4spd.

Here is a picture of 4 year old Gwoods sitting in it.

Image

It was keyed at his work and the driverseat bolsters failed. The car overheated constantly during AZ summers in Rush hour bad enough to have the head gaskets fail. I remember "helping" dad pull the heads to take them to a machine shop and have them improved. Moms garage floor still has a faint Ford blue 5.0 head outline where we painted them before putting the car back together. In 1986 Ford had a very decent 5.0 LX Mustang and dad traded it for one of them.

I would LOVE to find this car again. The closest thing to it would probably be one of the ex cop car Mustangs from 1983.

The Taurus "Interceptor" is a joke, and Ford's barely-disguised desperation to convince departments nationwide otherwise just drives that point home all the more effectively.

Out of the choices available, I guess it depends on what I need out of the car.
If I want something I can beat on, depend on, and enjoy driving without much trouble, I'd go Crown Vic.
If I wanted something a little more fun, with better handling and driver involvement, I'd go for the Caprice PPV. I'd be a LOT more inclined to choose it if I could get an LS3 or LT1 in it instead of the L77.
I wouldn't say no to a Raptor for all-around excellence, either. Go anywhere and have fun doing it.

Sorry guys, best choice is an ordinary crownvic/grandmarquis. What good is 500 hp supercar/muscle car when you're stuck in traffic. CrownVics around here are almost always mistaken for cop cars. So whenever you hit traffic in a vic or gmarq, people automatically move aside for you. Hard to beat that. :dblthumb:

Yup, if it would have been feasible we'd have picked one up and dumped the Xterra already. Love that beast.

Then there's the Wake Co., NC Z06 that Foust drove on Top Gear USA. Sure had his hands full on teh ramp there. Nice speed enforcement vehicle. :yesnod

I don't know you anymore.

Which part's "legit"? The Unibody? Or the wrong-wheel-drive? Or the 16mpg out of an ancient, overworked v6? Or the 4000lb+ curb weight? Or the complete lack of interior space, especially in the back seat where squad cars need it most? Or the complete absence of any kind of handling capabilities? Or the seventeen mile high belt line with terrible visibility all around?

New Taurus is as FAIL as any cop car has EVER been. Fail as any full size sedan of ANY KIND has ever been. I'd rather have an Avalon. At least it doesn't weigh more than an aircraft carrier and has actual interior space.

Actually, they don't. They panic, and glom up into a bundle, RIGHT FREAKING IN FRONT OF YOU. I wanted to put a set of discrete red&blues behind the grille JUST to get morons out of the way.

Freeway's a different story. 100mph between here and Tucson all the time, never a second glance. :)

^Ditto to MoD and every other time he's went on this rant. The Taurus is a pathetic pile of car. Also, dishonorable mention: The Ford Exploder is just as big of a pile of fail now as well, since Ford decided it would be a genius idea to build it on top of a Taurus platform and essentially make it look like a Taurus wagon with down syndrome

Also, how did something like a Raptor make it into consideration for this? All of the others make sense, but what use would most police departments have for a Raptor? An F150 I could see, but a Raptor seems a bit far fetched for most normal duty.

Really? I thought they were quite anemic. I had a friend who drove one for the Prince George's County PD and got to take it out once or twice at a local track. The V8 cruisers I had driven seemed way more awesome.

Ammon Idaho (basically Idaho Falls) has a few Caprice PPVs. Saw one stop someone at night a few months ago and recognized the tail lights immediately (though I did have a "Is that an Impala or a Caprice?" moment because they're pretty similar). They look pretty good in dark blue.

Around here they just bought a bunch of new Chargers. I think I'd much rather have the Caprice.

Lebanon PD has som caprices as does thp. thp cars are ugly. the LPD cars however rock the traditional black and white scheme and look ok.

In the Southwest, it can be THE difference. They are all over the border, from CA to TX.

Really? I didn't get that impression when I did a ridealong, but maybe he was pushing the damned thing as fast as it would possibly go and showing off and I mistook it for regular driving, if it's as bad as you say. I wasn't unimpressed for the ridealong, but maybe I was under a different impression of driving style.

So you were one of the slow folks I passed? :poke:

I-10 between PHX and Tucson everyone is driving 90+mph... I used to do it at least once a month. Once I got into a group of full dress Arab's in a 911 and Land Cruiser. They were going 120+ so I did too.

Agree with you on the crownvic/grand mq ex cop car. When I see one I usually pull it back onto the speedometer until I see who is driving.

The one I have been seeing in PHX lately that is hard to spot is one of the new body Explorers unmarked DPS he has almost got me twice.
