OK first let me apologize if this topic has been cover I searched and could not find what I was looking for. So having said that please don`t flame me if your r better at searching than me please post what to search for as i`v tried all I can think of.

I have the option between a 93,94,96 and a 92. I know there are differences in the motors and such that part I`m not concerned about as long as I have the right year when I buy the rebuild parts.

So here is my question I don`t know which year is best to buy, I`m going to buy the motor tomorrow at the junk yard so I can proceed with tearing it down and get the heads off to the machine shop. So having said that the 4 potential cars I have chosen are all complete, all turn over smoothly and are not missing more than simple pieces. So what year would be best to go with I would assume the 96 would be best being its the newest but new is not always better.

So any help would be wonderful.

thanks,ramper

Not the 96. OBD II

One the others, it does not matter, except that you will want a 90-93 ECU if you want to Mod it.

The 94-95 motor works great with the older harness, and computer.

Be sure to get all the engine's wiring harness, and its headers, MAF, and all the accessories that you can, with their brackets.

If you are really going to tear it down, its not as important, but you want to be sure to avoid an engine with oil sludge-buildup. If you finger the oil filler hole(one finger. Usually its its first time), feel in there for sludge, anything with any buildup, and also see what your finger finds in there. Also check the fluid. I highly reccommend buying new chain guides for all builds, Worth the 400 or so in parts.

A engine parts co in Phoenix has an engine kit for this motor. up to .040 over. The one I am about to build is getting those, unless I can get a set of low comp for under 500.

Everything craig said is spot on, another tid bit of info... In 94 (possibly mid-93) the heads were redesigned to oval intake ports. They flow a few more CFM than the siamese ports in the older motors.

Also, the 94+ motors already have the revised guides. So if a timing chain overhaul isn't within your budget, than a 94 motor is a better bet.

Myself, my S14 has a 92 motor and my Z is getting a 91 motor. I have a 94 motor torn down and the heads are getting reworked for next season.

No this wont be a budget build Im tearing the whole motor down and replacing as much as I can. As i`m finding out there isnt much in after market available for the vh, but it seems the stock internals are so over built that I dont need anything for it. I will be replacing the chain and guides. Im also going to do all the porting and polishing with the help of my buddy that just did his sr head. But over all im really looking forward to this swap it will be fun. Im gonna go with the pre-93 motor. And to answer your question all the motors I picked were complete with wire harnesses and ecus. I dont need the ac or power steering as this is going into a s13 hatch and im told it wont fit. But ok im off to the junk yard.

2.oil pump
?? Any reason for wanting to replace the oil pump? These oil pumps are stout. So stout in fact, that if you attack Japan, they'll counterattack by firing a volley of VH oil pumps back at you and seriously f*** your s***up!

Just clean it and fit new o-rings!

that really made me laugh. I was replacing it only because I wanted a fresh motor but if its not needed ill leave it be. I am thankful for the input. Is there anything else I should consider removing or adding to that list that you can think of?

Vac lines. Don't want a PITA leak that will have you chassing your tail for ages to get it to idle nicely.

everytime.

Vacum leaks.

I have the ones for the fuel damper/reg, and the brake booster.

thats all folks.

Plugging the rest was very important though.

If you get a Very good and clean engine, you will hav minimal work to do to it internally.

the motor is extremely clean for being in a junk yard. absolutely no sludge and I pulled the 93 model engine and according to the odo. it only had 89439 mile on it. everything was perfect on the car minus a front end collision. the interior was brown leather it was a complete shame. Good for me tho. over all i think i picked a winner.
