if i turbo my ka will it still pass smog in california i dont want to put all the money and time into it and it not pass so any information would help thanks for the time

In fact, nothing you do (aftermarket) is legal in CA unless you have a CARB exemption or approval.

Basically, your state sucks.

you do what most everyone else does:

- pass smog stock- swap in the turbo- run it for 2 years- swap out, smog again- repeat

ka=t's take a weekend to swap in/out if you're very proficient. longer if you're not.

but no, you will never pass visual.

my 2 year is almost up

anyways either return everything back to stock or pay someone on the side whichever budget you have

ok well thats what i thought haha ca smog sucks lol hmmm well when you say swap sorry this is probably a stupid question but when u say swap do you mean the whole engine or just the turbo set up?? and in order to turbo my brother has told me i would need a new wiring harness and ecu is this true?? or what all would i need computer and tuning wise and sorry bout all the questions but what kind of mpg are you guys with the ka-t's getting??? thanks for the help everyone

Just the Turbo setup. Just make sure you don't forget your egress and air injection when reinstalling. You don't need new harness but I would suggest an ecu chip of somesort for boost

sorry to the OP ahead of time, but it sounds like you need to do more searching. you ban do stuff to your ka to improve performance, but being in cali, its a lil more difficult. but can be done. any JDM TyTE swap, forget it. VG,VQ,LS! are just about the only swap that you can get legalized. BUT VG swap, no one ive ever heard of has gone and done it legit enough to pass. they all take a lot of "special"care to get legal.research on what you want. SR,CA,RB, all illegal. and the SR, is VERY identifiable by CHP officers. had my hood popped 3 times and all says "wow, i expected SR" or "why dont you have an SR20"one company made a smog legal turbo for the KA, but it was a one off piece, and they are very reluctent to respond to my emails. research, then see what you really want

i read somewhere that some of the greddykits have a carb exemption number/sticker. i know they are carb legal on their civic si and integra turbo kits.

not to sure on their nissan kits

this is the reason that makes me miss Arizona



honestly you can do some under table methods of swapping out before emissions. But if you're caught by CHP with those engine upgrades, you're gonna either get repo'd or BAR.

run a stock KA, do simple subtle mods. and be happy

or its time to run LS1
