In one of the current months car magazines, their long term test car called for its VERY FIRST oil change at just over 19,000 miles based on the dashboard "oil life monitor" system!!!!! Between that and NO dipsticks on BMW oil or auto trannies, you got to wonder what happened to "the ultimate drivivg machine" philosophy???? More like dummys R us

.I think the reason BMW did away with the oil & atf dipsticks is so owners cant visually see just how filthy their fluids are allowed to become now that BMW "pays" for the first 4 year/50,000 miles of servicing. At 19,000 mile intervals, big deal BMW pays for what, 2 oil changes in your first 50K of ownership.....more marketing than any real value to the customer there.

I actually read most of the thread on this at bimmerforums after seeing a link to it from an oil forum. It's amazing that engine was still running. They were working on all sorts of ideas to desludge and clean the engine. Sure is easier and more cost effective to just change the oil in the first place.

Why we recommend that no used car should be purchased without COMPLETE RECORDS.Really expensive and difficult to MEASURE rings and bearings or to replace the engine.

IF ONLY FIRST OWNERS were punished with a significantly lower resale, but then again it wouldn't trickle down to the retail buyer only the auction and junk are us used car stores.
