If a graphics card "supports" PCI Express 2.0, can it also work ...

...in an older PCI Express motherboard? I.e., one that does not have the 2.0 version of PCI Express slots?

Many of the graphics boards appear to do this, but I cannot tell from the on-line sites whether this is a uniform statement or not!

Anyone know the answer?
