Hello there,

I need to replace the idler pulley that is on the left side (when looking at the engine compartment from the front), but I can't seem to find the part #. It is the one that shares the belt with the alternator.

I tried this, but no luck: http://parts.infinitiusa.com/nissanpart ... tionid=117

Can anyone tell me the part number?

And if anyone has any tips for replacing, that would be appreciated as well. It's basically just loosen the tension bolt, replace pulley, and tighten tension bolt right?

TIA..

I have a 98 QX4

I'm not extremely familiar with the 98, so forgive me if I'm way off. I took a look on Amazon and found a handful of each tensioner type. I think this is the one you're looking for:

If that's not it, here's the other type:

As far as replacing the idler pulleys, see the FSM, MA-13. I think all you need to do is loosen the nut on the face of the pulley and then turn the long bolt that runs along the back of it. The long bolt controls how close the belt rides on the pulley. Doing that will allow you to pull the belt off.

Beyond that I won't be much help

Do the idler pulleys have the long screw on the back? I thought it was just a tensioner pulleys that have that? I'm confused..

Idler pulleys and tensioner pulleys are the same thing.

To use the diagram you linked to before:

Image

The red circles are the two idler pulleys you have. The one on the left is the one you were referring to originally. The green circle is the nut to loosen first. The blue lines represent the long bolts that run along the back of the pulleys (no idea if you would wrench them from the top or bottom). As you turn the long bolt, the pulleys move back and forth (orange arrows), tightening and loosening against the belt.

I did some more searching through the forums, and came across this:

The discussion is about idler pulleys on a 2002-era Pathfinder/QX4, but it should be applicable to you too. Basically, loosen the center nut (the green circle), turn the long bolt (blue line) to loosen the belts, then remove the center nut and pull off the pulley, being careful not to lose any washers and what-have-you that may fall off. Regrease the pulley and reinstall.

I'd give just regreasing it a go since it will save you a chunk of change if it works and you'll only have wasted some time if it doesn't. And you won't have to worry about replacing the entire assembly :dblthumb:

Wow! Thank you so much for doing all this! I had no idea it worked like that and probably would have screwed it up. I really appreciate it you taking the time to explain this to me.

Is the grease I use to grease the drive shaft okay for this purpose?

Thanks so much again!

No problem! :)

Driveshaft grease is probably just fine, but not knowing enough about it to make a good recommendation, I'd stick with the same Valvoline synthetic grease that I use on my wheel bearings.
