i don't know what the hell your friend was talking about, spraying brake fluid everywhere to find the leaks. maybe it's some kind of trick i don't know.. definitely wouldn't be the first. brake fluid eats paint real badly.
what kind of motor?
if it's a vacuum leak, i don't for-sure know if spraying anything anywhere is gonna do you much good. i hate messing with those damn hoses, but if you're looking for a leak, you probably want to start from one side of the motor and work your way across.check all the clamps and make sure they're still clampin', all hoses are connected tightly and secured, check along the hoses for dry-rot or cracks, and i think that's it for hoses.
anybody else want to add to that?
i talked to a mechanic when i was doing my FMIC instal, and on a 180, you have to cut through the battery tray, so you need to get a smaller battery or relocate it. i just cut the hole. i asked if getting a smaller battery had any adverse effects, and he said, "in the short-run, no, in the long-run, a little.." he explained that the life of the battery might be shortened if using a smaller than factory size, but otherwise charging, holding charge, and putting out wouldn't be an issue.my alternator puts out a solid 14.0 volts, and so far no problems. it's been about half a year.he might be talking out of his ***, but again, i have no issues with a smaller battery.
have you put a voltmeter on your battery? try on the battery terminals when the motor's off, then when the motor's on, and even on the alternator itself. post what voltage you get.
good luck.
