when i start the car the motor shakes a little and the rpm keeps going from about 100 up to 1000 and keeps bouncing back and forth, like it wants to cut off. then it eventually does, and sometimes when im driving. i replaced the mafs and it is still doing the same problem. so i took it to a mechanic and he put it on the scanner and sure enough - its the mafs. says it needs additional grounding... so i run a direct ground from the harness and it still does the same thing...any ideas? thank you!

Check the MAF harness connector. About every 2-3 months mine does the same thing, I have to remove the connector and slightly bend the contacts for a better connection, and the problem goes away. Ironically I just got done doing this when I read this thread.

i was gonna ask to see if anyone knows too. i check my ECU and the code was CODE 55, which means normal. but then i had the same idle problem. thanks

ya i was thinking of bending them too, maybe its not biting right. ill try that as soon as i can. grounding straight from the harness is the only possible ground to try right? and is checking the ecu for the code is the same thing as putting the scanner to it right? cuz when he scanned it he just told me it was the mafs and the voltage is off..so im assuming whatever code came up thats what it directed him to

i tried to put a peice of foil inside the connecter, only in the ground slot and it seemed like it didnt do anything. its the same thing as bending the connector. when i turn the a/c on it seems to idle better, stays at about 1000 but still shakes just not as bad

Well after all this I went out about an hour later and ran some errands and it started doing it again. Turning on the a/c steadied the idle some, but made it really high (about 1200-1400 rpm). So, this time, I disconnected (with the engine running) the throttle position sensor plug, and right away the idle steadied right at 900. I bent the contacts slightly, and plugged it back in. The idle dropped to about 800 and after about 100 miles since doing this the idle has been rock steady and it runs great again. You might try this....?

where is the sensor for the throttle postion located? and also where does that clamp clip to? directly around the actual plug?

i bent the contacts, made an additional ground...cant solve problem if i unplug the mafs the car will run but wont go over 2k rpm. whats wierd is that when i put a test light to the harness on the mafs, i have ground and power(which is the 2nd contact and 3rd contact), but when i put it in the first contact the idle drops but its still rough...im not sure how this could happen because a test light shouldnt make it do that...
